Chapter 16 - The Man Who Started the Nightmare
# Chapter 16 - The Man Who Started the Nightmare
Richard Carter stood behind the iron gates of his private estate, staring at the son who had once worshipped him.
"You think I started this?" he repeated.
Daniel didn't answer.
His father stepped closer, his silver hair catching the first pale light of morning.
"You think Samuel Mercer invented an entire network of falsified identities because I offered him money?"
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"I think you financed it. I think you helped hide children from their families. And I know you kidnapped Ethan."
Richard smiled without warmth.
"Then you know very little."
Behind Daniel, Detective Aaron Mitchell stood near an unmarked police vehicle. Several officers remained positioned around the estate.
The situation had become increasingly dangerous.
Richard controlled the house.
Rebecca and Ethan were inside.
And Daniel had no idea whether his father had other people waiting beyond the windows.
"Tell me what happened," Daniel demanded.
Richard looked toward the house.
"Seventeen years ago, Charles Whitmore came to me with a problem."
"Caroline Mercer."
Richard's expression changed.
"So you've found her name."
"She had Charles's child."
"Yes."
"And Charles wanted the child hidden."
Richard studied him.
"That's what Charles told you?"
Daniel hesitated.
Richard continued.
"Caroline was frightened. Samuel Mercer convinced her that Charles intended to take the baby from her. Charles insisted Caroline was threatening to destroy his marriage and career."
"Which one was telling the truth?"
"At the time, I believed Charles."
Daniel stared at him.
"Of course you did."
Richard ignored the accusation.
"Mercer offered to arrange a private placement. Charles wanted discretion. I provided money."
"Two million dollars."
Richard's eyes narrowed.
"You found the authorization."
"Yes."
"Then you should know the money was transferred through a legal account."
"That doesn't make what happened legal."
Richard's smile disappeared.
"No. It doesn't."
For the first time, Daniel heard something unexpected in his father's voice.
Regret.
But he refused to mistake regret for innocence.
"Where did the child go?" Daniel asked.
Richard looked away.
"That's where everything began to unravel."
Seventeen years earlier, Richard Carter had believed Samuel Mercer was a discreet physician capable of resolving complicated family situations.
He had known Mercer through charitable fundraising events.
The doctor was intelligent, polished, and respected.
He understood medical systems.
He understood paperwork.
And, most importantly to Richard, he understood secrecy.
When Caroline Mercer became pregnant with Charles Whitmore's child, Samuel proposed a private arrangement.
The baby would be placed with a family.
Charles would provide financial support.
Caroline would receive assurances that the child would be cared for.
Richard agreed to finance the arrangement.
But shortly after the birth, Caroline changed her mind.
She wanted her son back.
Mercer refused.
He claimed the placement was complete.
Caroline demanded documents.
The records had already been altered.
The baby had disappeared into a new identity.
Richard discovered that Mercer had done something far more serious than he had authorized.
Instead of arranging a lawful adoption, Mercer had allegedly created false registrations and concealed the child's location.
Charles panicked.
Caroline threatened to contact the authorities.
Mercer demanded more money.
And Richard made the decision that would eventually destroy his family.
He paid Mercer to remain silent.
Then he paid again.
And again.
Each payment created another record.
Each record became another source of leverage.
Mercer began using the same system for other wealthy clients.
Richard helped conceal the transactions through private companies.
What began as one unlawful arrangement expanded into a network of falsified identities, hidden payments, and children whose original records became increasingly difficult to trace.
Daniel listened in disbelief.
"You could have stopped him."
Richard's expression hardened.
"By then, exposing Mercer would have exposed Charles, the foundation, and me."
"So you protected yourself."
"I protected the family."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"You keep using that word."
Richard stared at him.
"Family?"
"Protection."
Daniel stepped closer.
"You protected your reputation. Your money. Your business partners. But you didn't protect the children."
Richard said nothing.
Daniel continued.
"Caroline lost her son. Rebecca lost hers. Ethan and Lily grew up separated. Grace and Noah were hidden under false records."
Richard's jaw tightened.
"Not everything you're blaming on me was my decision."
"Then whose?"
Richard hesitated.
Daniel felt his pulse quicken.
"Who ordered the children moved?"
"Mercer handled the medical arrangements."
"And who paid him?"
Richard looked away.
Daniel shook his head.
"That's what I thought."
Inside the estate, Rebecca Carter stood beside Ethan near the locked bedroom door.
She had been listening to raised voices downstairs.
Richard was speaking to Daniel.
She recognized the controlled rhythm of his voice.
The same voice he had used years earlier when he told her that taking Ethan home was the only way to keep the boy safe.
Ethan sat on the bed, watching her.
"Mom?"
Rebecca turned.
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Is Dad outside?"
She nodded.
"Yes."
"Can he get us out?"
Rebecca swallowed.
"He's trying."
Ethan looked toward the window.
"Grandpa said Dad would choose Benjamin."
Rebecca's chest tightened.
"Richard says things to frighten people."
"But Benjamin might really be Dad's son."
Rebecca sat beside him.
"That doesn't change what you are to Daniel."
Ethan lowered his eyes.
"What am I?"
She took his hand.
"His son."
Ethan's lips trembled.
"Even if we don't have the same blood?"
"Even then."
For several seconds, Ethan was silent.
Then he whispered, "I don't want Benjamin to hate me."
Rebecca felt tears rise.
"Why would he?"
"Because I got to grow up with Dad."
The words broke her heart.
She pulled Ethan close.
"None of this was your fault."
He buried his face against her shoulder.
Then he asked something that made Rebecca go still.
"Mom, did you know Lily was my sister?"
Rebecca closed her eyes.
The question she had feared for twelve years had finally arrived.
"I knew the records said you were twins."
Ethan pulled away.
"But?"
"I never trusted those records."
He stared at her.
"Then why did you keep us apart?"
Rebecca struggled to answer.
"Because Richard threatened both of you."
Ethan looked toward the door.
"He's a bad man."
Rebecca hesitated.
Then said quietly, "He's done terrible things."
Ethan studied her.
"Can people who do terrible things ever become good?"
Rebecca thought of Charles.
Of Richard.
Of the years she had spent hoping someone involved would finally tell the truth.
"I think people can change," she said. "But only if they stop hurting others and take responsibility for what they've done."
Ethan looked down.
Then whispered, "I hope Grandpa changes before somebody dies."
Rebecca held him tighter.
Outside, Daniel's phone vibrated.
A message from Detective Mitchell.
Keep Richard talking. Negotiators are working on getting Rebecca and Ethan out.
Daniel slipped the phone into his pocket.
"Father, why did you fake your death?"
Richard studied him.
"Because Mercer had become unpredictable."
"Explain."
"Six years ago, he threatened to release documents connecting me to the foundation."
"So you disappeared."
"I removed myself from public life."
"You let me bury you."
Richard's expression softened slightly.
"Daniel—"
"No."
Daniel's voice shook.
"You let your son believe you were dead."
Richard looked away.
"You would have tried to find me."
"Of course I would have!"
"And that would have put you in danger."
Daniel stared at him.
"You sound exactly like Rebecca."
Richard's expression changed.
"Rebecca understood more than you think."
Daniel felt anger rise.
"She understood that you were threatening children."
Richard shook his head.
"She understood that Mercer wasn't working alone."
Daniel froze.
"What?"
Richard looked toward the house.
"Mercer had clients I never met. People with money and influence. When Rebecca discovered the ledger, she thought exposing it would end everything."
"Wouldn't it?"
"Not without putting every child listed in those records at risk."
Daniel felt a chill.
"Then why didn't you give the evidence to the authorities?"
Richard looked at him.
"Because I didn't know whom I could trust."
Daniel thought of Detective Mitchell's compromised investigation.
Evidence disappearing.
Witnesses withdrawing statements.
Mercer vanishing before he could be questioned.
Richard's explanation was possible.
But it didn't excuse the kidnapping.
"Even if that's true," Daniel said, "you still chose to control people instead of helping them."
Richard's eyes narrowed.
"You're beginning to sound like your wife."
Daniel looked directly at him.
"Good."
At 6:47 a.m., Charles Whitmore entered the upstairs hallway.
He carried a ring of keys.
Rebecca heard him approaching.
She immediately stood in front of Ethan.
The lock turned.
Charles opened the door.
For a moment, he simply stared at her.
"Rebecca."
She didn't move.
"Charles."
His face looked exhausted.
"I came to get you out."
Rebecca's expression hardened.
"Why should I believe you?"
Charles glanced toward the stairs.
"Because Richard has lost control."
"You helped him."
"I know."
"You arranged my transfer."
"I know."
"You let Daniel bury me."
Charles lowered his head.
Rebecca felt anger surge.
"Don't stand there pretending you suddenly care."
Charles looked up.
"I never wanted Ethan involved."
Rebecca laughed bitterly.
"Then why did you take him?"
Charles hesitated.
"Richard said he needed the boy to make you surrender the ledger."
"And you obeyed."
Charles said nothing.
Rebecca stepped closer.
"Where are Lily and Noah?"
His expression changed.
"Not here."
"Are they alive?"
"Yes."
Rebecca felt a wave of relief.
"Where?"
Charles hesitated.
"With Caroline."
Rebecca froze.
"Caroline Mercer?"
He nodded.
Rebecca stared at him.
For years, Caroline had been one of the most confusing figures in the investigation.
She had raised Benjamin.
She had helped Mercer move children.
She had also attempted to protect Adrian, the child she had lost seventeen years earlier.
"Why would Caroline have Lily and Noah?" Rebecca demanded.
Charles looked toward Ethan.
"Because she's trying to make up for what Samuel did."
Rebecca didn't believe him.
"Where is she?"
"At an old clinic outside Millhaven."
"Which clinic?"
Charles hesitated.
Then he whispered, "The one beneath Northbridge's original offices."
Rebecca felt her pulse quicken.
She had heard of that property.
A small medical building converted into private offices years earlier.
It had never appeared in the St. Catherine's records.
"Does Richard know?"
Charles shook his head.
"Not yet."
Rebecca stared at him.
"Then why are you telling me?"
Charles's eyes filled.
"Because I finally understand what Richard intends to do."
"What?"
Charles looked toward Ethan.
"He's going to destroy the remaining evidence."
Rebecca felt cold.
"And the children?"
Charles didn't answer.
That silence was enough.
At 7:03 a.m., Detective Mitchell received an urgent call.
He stepped away from the perimeter.
Daniel watched his expression change.
"What happened?"
Mitchell listened carefully.
Then said, "Send the address immediately."
He ended the call.
"Daniel, we may have located Lily and Noah."
Daniel's heart accelerated.
"Where?"
"An old medical property outside Millhaven."
Daniel stared.
"How?"
"An anonymous caller provided information that matches part of our investigation."
Daniel looked toward the estate.
Charles.
Rebecca.
Someone inside had found a way to communicate.
"Are they alive?"
"We're verifying."
Daniel exhaled shakily.
For the first time in hours, hope returned.
Then Mitchell added, "There's something else."
Daniel's stomach tightened.
"What?"
"The caller said Caroline Mercer is with them."
Daniel froze.
"Caroline?"
Mitchell nodded.
"And she claims to have the original birth records."
Daniel felt his heartbeat accelerate.
The records.
The evidence that could finally establish which children belonged to which families.
"Then we need to find her."
"We're sending a team."
Daniel looked toward Richard.
His father was speaking quietly with someone inside the house.
"Don't let Richard know."
Mitchell studied him.
"Why?"
"Because he wants those records destroyed."
At 7:21 a.m., Richard received a phone call.
Daniel watched him answer.
His father's expression changed almost immediately.
"What do you mean she's there?"
A pause.
Richard turned away.
"Who told the police?"
Daniel felt a chill.
Richard listened.
Then his face hardened.
"Find out."
He ended the call.
For several seconds, he stood motionless.
Then he looked toward Daniel.
"Your detective is making a mistake."
Daniel's pulse quickened.
"What mistake?"
"He's sending officers to Millhaven."
Daniel froze.
Richard stepped closer to the gate.
"Caroline has the children."
Daniel stared.
"How do you know?"
"Because I know what she's planning."
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
"What?"
Richard looked toward the house.
"She's going to release the original records."
Daniel frowned.
"That's what we want."
Richard shook his head.
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because those records contain something you aren't ready to see."
Daniel's anger surged.
"Stop deciding what I'm allowed to know."
Richard studied him.
Then said quietly, "You think Benjamin is your biological son."
Daniel went still.
"Rebecca believes he is."
Richard nodded.
"Yes."
"Is she wrong?"
Richard hesitated.
Daniel felt his heartbeat accelerate.
"Father?"
Richard looked away.
"Benjamin was the child Caroline raised."
"I know."
"But he wasn't the child Rebecca delivered."
Daniel froze.
"What?"
Richard's expression became grave.
"Mercer wanted you to believe that."
Daniel stared at him.
"Why?"
"Because it kept you searching in the wrong direction."
Daniel felt the ground shift beneath him.
"Then where is my biological son?"
Richard looked toward the upstairs windows.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he whispered, "Closer than you think."
Daniel felt his heart hammer.
"What does that mean?"
Richard's eyes filled with something Daniel had never seen before.
Fear.
"Daniel, the child Rebecca delivered twelve years ago was never sent to Caroline."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Then who took him?"
Richard swallowed.
"Mercer."
"Where?"
Richard looked down.
"He changed the baby's identity."
Daniel felt sick.
"To what?"
Richard's voice became barely audible.
"A name you already know."
Daniel stared.
"Which name?"
Richard looked directly into his eyes.
"Noah."
Daniel stopped breathing.
"Noah?
The boy who had called him from captivity.
The boy who had appeared to be only three or four years old.
The child supposedly born alongside Grace.
Daniel shook his head.
"That's impossible."
Richard nodded slowly.
"Yes. It is."
Daniel felt anger rise.
"Then stop lying to me!"
Richard stepped closer.
"The Noah you've seen isn't the original Noah."
Daniel froze.
"What?"
Richard's expression darkened.
"Mercer reused the name."
Daniel stared.
Another duplicate identity.
Another false registration.
Another child hidden behind paperwork.
"Then where is the original Noah?"
Richard looked toward the estate.
Then whispered, "He grew up under another name."
Daniel's heart pounded.
"What name?"
Richard closed his eyes.
"Ethan."
Daniel stopped breathing.
For several seconds, the world seemed to disappear.
Ethan.
The boy he had raised.
The child Rebecca believed was not biologically theirs.
The son who had been taken from school.
Richard continued.
"Rebecca was right that her newborn had been removed. She was wrong about which child was returned."
Daniel stared at him.
"No."
Richard's voice trembled.
"Mercer switched the identification bands twice."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
"The boy Rebecca brought home was her biological son."
Daniel felt tears rise.
"Then why did you let her believe otherwise?"
Richard looked away.
"Because Mercer needed her searching for a child who was already safe."
Daniel's hands shook.
"And you knew?"
Richard didn't answer.
Daniel stepped closer.
"Did you know Ethan was my biological son?"
Richard slowly nodded.
Daniel felt something inside him break.
For twelve years, Rebecca had believed she was raising a child whose origins were uncertain.
For four years, Daniel had mourned her.
For days, he had feared Ethan wasn't biologically his.
And Richard had known the truth.
"You let us suffer," Daniel whispered.
Richard looked at him.
"I thought I was protecting the family."
Daniel stared.
Then said quietly, "You destroyed it."
At 7:46 a.m., Mitchell's phone rang again.
He listened.
His expression changed.
Then he looked toward Daniel.
"Officers have reached the Millhaven clinic."
Daniel turned immediately.
"Did they find Lily?"
Mitchell hesitated.
"Yes."
Daniel felt relief surge.
"And Noah?"
"Yes."
"Are they safe?"
"They're with officers now."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Thank God.
Then Mitchell continued.
"But Caroline Mercer is missing."
Daniel looked up.
"What?"
"She left before officers arrived."
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
"Did she leave the records?"
Mitchell nodded.
"She left a sealed case."
Daniel's pulse accelerated.
"What's inside?"
"We haven't opened it yet."
Daniel stared toward Richard.
His father had gone pale.
Then Mitchell added something that made Daniel's blood run cold.
"There's a message attached."
Daniel turned.
"What does it say?"
Mitchell read from his phone.
"The original records are inside. But before you open them, ask Richard Carter what happened to the baby Rebecca delivered."
Daniel stared at his father.
Richard's expression collapsed.
For the first time in Daniel's life, the powerful man looked utterly defeated.
Then Richard whispered, "Caroline knows."
Daniel felt a chill.
"Knows what?"
Richard shook his head.
"Everything."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Then tell me."
Richard looked toward the estate.
His voice broke.
"Daniel, there was never supposed to be a second switch."
Daniel froze.
"What?"
Richard's eyes filled.
"Mercer changed the babies again after Rebecca left the hospital."
Daniel stared.
"Why?"
Richard swallowed.
"Because someone paid him to."
Daniel's heartbeat accelerated.
"Who?"
Richard looked directly at him.
Then whispered the name Daniel least expected to hear.
"Vanessa."
