Chapter 6 - The Betrayal That Could Destroy the Carter Empire

Thomas Vale Sr. had spent thirty-three years preparing for the night his greatest secret would finally become useful.

But as he watched the lights glowing inside Evelyn Ward's apartment, he felt something he had not experienced in decades.

Hesitation.

Inside that building stood three people whose lives he had manipulated in ways none of them fully understood.

Alexander Carter.

Elena Carter.

Catherine Carter.

And sleeping somewhere upstairs was a little girl who had inherited none of their ambitions but all of their dangers.

The man beside Thomas shifted impatiently.

"Sir, the team is in position."

Thomas continued watching the windows.

"Any sign of Richard Blake?"

"Not yet."

"Keep looking."

"Should we enter?"

Thomas glanced at the sealed medical envelope resting on his lap.

The genetic report inside identified him as Alexander Carter's biological father.

It was a truth he had concealed for three decades.

A truth William Carter had paid dearly to bury.

And a truth that would destroy the carefully constructed hatred between Alexander and Thomas Jr. if either man discovered it.

"Not until I give the order," Thomas said.

His associate frowned.

"Mr. Vale, the board meeting begins in less than five hours. If Alexander reaches his attorneys before then—"

"Alexander's attorneys cannot save him."

"Then why are we waiting?"

Thomas looked toward the apartment.

"Because Catherine is inside."

The associate lowered his voice.

"You still love her?"

Thomas gave a cold smile.

"Love has nothing to do with this."

But he did not order the men forward.

Upstairs, Alexander Carter stood beside the window, watching the two strangers beside the black sedan.

Michael Ward had switched off the kitchen lights.

The apartment was illuminated only by a small lamp near Sofie's sleeping place.

Elena held Catherine's letter tightly.

"Are those Thomas's men?" she whispered.

Catherine nodded.

"His father's."

Alexander turned.

"How do you know?"

"I recognize the driver."

"From where?"

Catherine hesitated.

Alexander's patience broke.

"Mother, people have been shot tonight. Elena and her daughter were nearly abducted. Richard tried to explain your disappearance while holding a gun. Whatever you think you're protecting, your silence is making this worse."

Catherine looked at him.

The word Mother seemed to wound her more deeply than his anger.

"I understand."

"Then tell us the truth."

She lowered herself into a chair.

"Thomas Vale was once the most important man in my life."

Elena watched her closely.

"You were engaged to him."

Catherine nodded.

"Before William."

"What happened?"

"Thomas became obsessed with building an empire. He believed loyalty was something people owed him, regardless of what he did to deserve it."

Alexander folded his arms.

"And William was different?"

"William had his faults. But he understood that love couldn't be purchased."

Alexander almost laughed.

"The evidence we've discovered suggests he tried purchasing quite a lot."

Catherine accepted the remark.

"Yes. He made terrible compromises."

Elena stepped closer.

"Who was the father of your twins?"

The question brought silence.

Catherine looked at Elena.

Then at Alexander.

"I cannot answer that until I know what Thomas has told his son."

"Why does that matter?" Elena asked.

"Because Thomas Jr. has been raised to believe a lie that could get all of you killed."

Michael moved toward the window.

"Two more vehicles."

Alexander glanced outside.

A second black sedan had stopped at the corner.

Then a third.

They were being surrounded.

"How do we leave?" Alexander asked.

Evelyn rose from the sofa.

"There's an old service passage behind the bookstore."

Michael nodded.

"It opens onto the next block."

Alexander looked toward Sofie.

"Wake her gently. We're leaving."

Elena moved immediately.

But Catherine caught her wrist.

"Elena."

She stopped.

"What?"

"Whatever happens tonight, you must recover Maria's music box."

Elena stared at her.

"Why?"

"Because the second ledger contains more than financial records."

"What else?"

Catherine's voice shook.

"Names. Children. Payments. Birth certificates. Evidence that could imprison people who believe themselves untouchable."

Alexander studied her.

"Including Thomas Vale?"

"Yes."

"And Richard Blake?"

Catherine looked away.

Alexander felt his stomach tighten.

"Mother?"

She whispered, "Richard did things I can never forgive."

Elena took a step backward.

"What things?"

Before Catherine could answer, glass shattered somewhere below.

Michael moved toward the hallway.

"They're inside the bookstore."

Alexander grabbed Sofie's blanket from the sofa.

"Everyone downstairs. Now."

The service passage was narrow and smelled of damp brick.

Michael led the group with a flashlight.

Evelyn followed, leaning heavily on Catherine's arm.

Elena carried Sofie, who had awakened but remained unusually quiet.

Alexander stayed at the rear.

As they approached the exit, his phone vibrated.

An incoming call.

Richard Blake.

Alexander answered.

"Where are you?"

"Two blocks from Evelyn's building."

"Thomas Vale's men are here."

"I know."

Alexander stopped.

"How?"

"Because I followed them."

"Then call the police."

"I already did. But you have to leave before they arrive."

Alexander glanced toward the others.

"We're using the service passage."

Richard fell silent.

Then his voice sharpened.

"Alexander, stop."

"What?"

"Which passage?"

"The one behind the bookstore."

Richard cursed.

"That's not an escape route."

Alexander felt cold.

"What are you talking about?"

"Thomas paid for the renovation ten years ago. He knows where it leads."

Alexander looked toward Michael.

Ahead, the narrow passage opened into a small underground loading bay.

The exit door stood twenty feet away.

"Michael!" Alexander shouted.

Michael stopped.

"What?"

"Don't open that door."

Too late.

A metallic click sounded from outside.

Then the exit swung inward.

Three armed men entered.

"Everyone against the wall," the first ordered.

Elena immediately stepped backward, shielding Sofie.

Michael raised his hands.

"There's a child here."

"We know."

Alexander moved forward.

"I'm Alexander Carter. Whatever your employer wants, he can discuss it with me."

The tallest man examined him.

"Mr. Carter, we're not here for you."

Alexander's expression hardened.

"Then who?"

The man pointed toward Catherine.

"Her."

Catherine went pale.

Elena tightened her hold on Sofie.

"No."

The armed man stepped closer.

"Mrs. Carter, please come with us."

Alexander blocked his path.

"She's not going anywhere."

The man raised his weapon.

Alexander did not move.

"Then you'll have to shoot me."

For several seconds, the loading bay remained silent.

Then another voice spoke from behind the armed men.

"Put the gun down."

Everyone turned.

A younger man entered wearing a navy overcoat.

Dark hair.

Sharp features.

A thin scar along his left temple.

Alexander stared.

It was like looking into a distorted mirror.

Thomas Vale Jr.

The stranger looked at Alexander with equal intensity.

"So," Thomas said quietly, "we finally meet."

Thomas had expected hatred.

He had imagined confronting Alexander Carter hundreds of times.

In those fantasies, Alexander was arrogant, dismissive, and incapable of understanding the suffering caused by his family.

But the man standing before him was protecting a frightened child and refusing to abandon a woman Thomas believed had been dead for decades.

It unsettled him.

Alexander studied his face.

"Thomas Vale."

Thomas nodded.

"Alexander Carter."

Elena moved toward Catherine.

Thomas's gaze followed her.

For a moment, his composure faltered.

"Elena?"

She stared at him.

"You know my name."

"Yes."

"You've been watching me."

Thomas looked toward his armed escorts.

"Lower your weapons."

They obeyed reluctantly.

Michael remained tense.

"Why are you here?"

Thomas ignored him.

His attention had settled on Catherine.

The woman stood beside Evelyn, one hand pressed against the brick wall.

She was older than in the photographs.

Much older.

But her eyes were unmistakable.

Thomas felt his chest tighten.

"Catherine?"

She looked at him.

Her lips trembled.

"Thomas."

Hearing his name in her voice nearly broke him.

He had spent his childhood imagining what his mother might have sounded like.

Now she was standing only a few steps away.

Alive.

Thomas approached slowly.

"My father told me you died."

Catherine began to cry.

"I know."

"He told me William Carter abandoned you."

She shook her head.

"Thomas, your father told you many things that weren't true."

Thomas stopped.

"Then tell me what is true."

Catherine looked toward Elena.

Then Alexander.

Finally, she reached toward Thomas.

"My son."

Thomas stared at her hand.

For a moment, he seemed unable to move.

Then he stepped closer.

Catherine touched his face.

Her fingertips traced the scar along his temple.

She broke into tears.

"I thought I would never see you again."

Thomas swallowed.

"You knew I was alive?"

"I hoped."

"Did you look for me?"

"Every year."

He stepped back.

"Then why didn't you find me?"

"Because your father kept moving you."

Thomas shook his head.

"No."

"Thomas—"

"He raised me."

"I know."

"He protected me."

Catherine's expression changed.

"From what?"

Thomas stared at her.

"From the people who killed you."

Silence filled the loading bay.

Catherine slowly lowered her hand.

"Thomas, I wasn't killed."

"Then why did he tell me you were?"

She looked at Alexander.

Then Elena.

"Because he wanted you to hate the Carter family enough to destroy it."

Thomas stood motionless.

Alexander watched the confrontation with a mixture of suspicion and sympathy.

He recognized the expression on Thomas's face.

It was the same disbelief he had felt when Catherine appeared alive.

The collapse of a childhood.

The sudden realization that memories might have been carefully manufactured.

Thomas looked toward his security team.

"Everyone outside."

One man hesitated.

"Your father instructed—"

"I don't care what my father instructed."

"Mr. Vale—"

"Out."

The men withdrew.

Thomas waited until their footsteps faded.

Then he turned toward Catherine.

"Tell me everything."

At 3:41 a.m., Richard Blake arrived outside the bookstore.

The police had sealed off the street.

Officers questioned employees and searched the abandoned ground floor.

Richard approached a detective.

"I'm looking for Alexander Carter."

The detective studied him.

"Your name?"

"Richard Blake."

The detective's expression changed.

"Mr. Blake, we were instructed to bring you in for questioning."

Richard felt his stomach tighten.

"By whom?"

"That's not information I can share."

Two officers approached.

"Sir, please come with us."

Richard glanced toward the bookstore.

He had expected Thomas Vale Sr. to move against Catherine.

He had not expected the police to be waiting for him.

"Am I under arrest?"

"Not at this time."

Richard looked at the officers.

Then he slowly reached into his coat.

Both men tensed.

"Hands where we can see them."

Richard withdrew his phone.

"I have information relevant to several attempted murders."

The detective narrowed his eyes.

"Then you can tell us at the station."

Richard looked down at a message he had received minutes earlier.

It contained a photograph of Alexander standing beside Thomas Jr.

Beneath it was a short sentence.

THE BROTHERS ARE TOGETHER.

Richard closed his eyes.

Thomas Vale Sr. had finally brought them into the same room.

That meant the final stage of his plan had begun.

In the underground loading bay, Catherine sat on a wooden crate.

Thomas Jr. stood before her.

Alexander remained beside Elena and Sofie.

Evelyn watched from a nearby chair.

For several minutes, Catherine explained the illegal clinic, the missing infants, and Thomas Vale Sr.'s manipulation of corporate records.

Thomas listened without interrupting.

When she finished, his expression was almost blank.

"You're saying my father kidnapped me."

Catherine nodded.

"He took you from the clinic before I regained consciousness."

"And Elena?"

"Maria escaped with her."

Thomas looked toward Elena.

His twin sister.

A woman he had followed through surveillance reports without knowing their connection.

Elena stared back.

She wanted to feel joy.

For thirty-three years, she had lived without a brother.

Now she had found one.

But he was also the man whose signature appeared on a surveillance memorandum concerning her daughter.

"You authorized people to watch Sofie," she said.

Thomas looked startled.

"Who told you that?"

"Michael found the memorandum."

Thomas's expression hardened.

"I authorized protection."

"Protection?"

"Your daughter was being followed by people outside my organization."

Elena felt sick.

"Who?"

Thomas hesitated.

Alexander stepped forward.

"Answer her."

Thomas looked between them.

"Richard Blake's people."

Alexander stared.

"Richard was protecting Elena."

Thomas gave a bitter laugh.

"Richard has been collecting information on her family for years."

"Why?"

"Because he was searching for the second ledger."

Catherine rose.

"The ledger belongs to Maria's family."

Thomas looked at her.

"Not anymore."

Elena's face changed.

"What does that mean?"

Thomas hesitated.

Then he reached into his coat and removed a document.

It was the ownership notification Alexander had received earlier.

VALE HERITAGE CAPITAL.

Twelve percent.

Elena stared.

"You stole my inheritance."

Thomas shook his head.

"I activated the trust under its original provisions."

"You knew I was alive!"

"I suspected."

"Then why claim the shares?"

Thomas looked down.

"Because the trust contained a clause allowing the surviving beneficiary to recover the assets if the other beneficiary was legally deceased."

Elena felt her anger rise.

"Someone declared me dead."

"Yes."

"And you used that lie."

Thomas said nothing.

Alexander stepped between them.

"You can reverse the transfer."

Thomas looked at him.

"That isn't so simple."

"Make it simple."

"If I reverse it now, my father will know I've discovered the truth."

Alexander's expression hardened.

"He already knows."

Thomas looked toward the passage entrance.

For the first time, uncertainty crossed his face.

"What?"

Alexander held up his phone.

A new message had arrived.

From an unknown number.

YOU HAVE UNTIL 8:00 A.M. TO CHOOSE WHICH FAMILY SURVIVES.

Attached was a photograph.

Maria's old apartment.

Its front door stood open.

Inside, the rooms had been ransacked.

The wooden music box lay shattered on the floor.

Elena gasped.

"No."

Alexander enlarged the image.

The music box had been opened.

Its interior compartment was empty.

The second ledger was gone.

Catherine covered her mouth.

Thomas stared at the photograph.

Then his phone vibrated.

His father's name appeared.

He answered.

"Where is the ledger?"

Thomas Sr. laughed softly.

"Always impatient."

"You broke into Elena's apartment."

"I recovered property that never belonged to Maria."

Thomas gripped the phone.

"What have you done?"

"Something I should have done thirty-three years ago."

Thomas looked toward Catherine.

His father's voice softened.

"Bring her to me."

"No."

"Thomas."

"I know she's alive."

A pause.

Then Thomas Sr. said, "Of course you do."

"You lied to me."

"Yes."

The confession stunned him.

"You admit it?"

"I lied because the truth would have destroyed you."

Thomas's expression twisted.

"You stole me from my mother."

"I gave you a life."

"You gave me revenge."

His father remained silent.

Then he asked quietly, "Have you met Alexander?"

Thomas looked toward the billionaire.

"Yes."

"Does he know?"

Thomas frowned.

"Know what?"

Thomas Sr. sighed.

"I suppose Richard hasn't told him."

"Tell me what?"

His father spoke slowly.

"Alexander Carter is not William Carter's biological son."

Thomas stared.

"We already know Evelyn Ward gave birth to him."

"That isn't what I'm talking about."

Thomas felt his pulse quicken.

"What are you saying?"

"William could never have fathered Alexander."

"Then who did?"

Thomas Sr. paused.

Then he answered.

"I did."

The loading bay seemed to contract around Thomas.

He looked at Alexander.

The resemblance between them suddenly felt terrifying.

"You're saying Alexander is your son?"

"Yes."

Thomas's voice trembled.

"Then what does that make him to me?"

His father spoke without hesitation.

"Your older half-brother."

Thomas lowered the phone.

Alexander stared at him.

"What happened?"

Thomas could barely speak.

"My father says..."

He stopped.

Elena stepped closer.

"Thomas?"

Thomas looked directly at Alexander.

"He says you're his son."

Alexander went completely still.

For a moment, neither man spoke.

Then Catherine made a sound that none of them had heard before.

A small, broken gasp.

Everyone turned.

She was staring at Thomas's phone.

"No."

Her face drained of color.

"No, he can't know."

Alexander looked at her.

"Mother?"

Catherine shook her head.

"Thomas, don't believe him."

Thomas stared.

"Why?"

"Because if he's telling you that now, he's already found the missing medical records."

Alexander stepped closer.

"What records?"

Catherine looked at Evelyn.

The elderly nurse began to cry.

Alexander felt his patience snap.

"Someone tell me the truth!"

Catherine turned toward him.

Her voice was barely audible.

"Alexander, Evelyn gave birth to you. But the records connecting you to Thomas Vale were deliberately falsified."

Thomas stared.

"What?"

Catherine covered her mouth.

"The man who claims to be your father arranged the original parentage records. We never had independent proof."

Alexander stood frozen.

Thomas's phone suddenly lit up again.

A new message from his father.

This time it contained a video.

The image showed a dimly lit room.

A wooden chair.

A single overhead light.

And Richard Blake sitting with his hands bound behind his back.

Blood ran from a cut above his eyebrow.

Thomas Sr. stepped into the frame.

He looked directly into the camera.

"Alexander."

Alexander felt his stomach tighten.

"Your friend Richard has something to confess."

Thomas Sr. moved aside.

Richard raised his head.

His voice was weak.

"Catherine..."

He swallowed.

"I'm sorry."

Someone behind the camera spoke.

"Tell them."

Richard closed his eyes.

Then he looked into the lens.

"I was the one who arranged for Catherine's twins to be taken."

Elena stumbled backward.

Thomas stared at the screen.

Alexander could not move.

Richard continued, tears running down his face.

"And one of those babies was never supposed to survive."

The video ended.
