Chapter 19 - The Thing in the Tomb

The heartbeat beneath High Keep did not belong to anything that should have possessed a heart.

BOOM.

Stone trembled.

BOOM.

Dust fell from the ancient ceiling.

BOOM.

And every shadow in the chamber turned toward Toby.

Not metaphorically.

The darkness itself moved.

Thin pools beneath broken pillars stretched across the floor like living fingers, all pointing toward the ten-year-old boy.

Gareth stepped in front of him.

"No."

Aeron floated above the chamber, black wings spread behind him.

But when he spoke, the voice was not his.

THE BLOOD REMEMBERS ME.

Cael lifted Kingsbane.

"Get out of him."

The thing wearing Aeron smiled.

HE INVITED ME.

Ancient Lyra stared at her brother.

"You're lying."

AM I?

Aeron's black eyes suddenly turned gold.

For half a second, his real voice escaped.

"Lyra..."

She stepped forward.

"Aeron!"

"Don't—"

His body convulsed.

The black returned.

TOO LATE.

Mira's Fourth Flame ignited over her heart.

"We separated Malachar from Lyra. We can do it again."

Ancient Lyra seized her wrist.

"No."

"You said Aeron can be separated."

"From Shades."

Lyra looked up at her brother.

"That isn't a Shade."

Toby frowned.

"Then what is it?"

Ancient Lyra answered without taking her eyes from Aeron.

"The source."

Silence.

Seraphine whispered, "The thing dreaming beyond the Veil."

"Yes."

"What is its name?"

Ancient Lyra went pale.

"I don't know."

Aeron laughed.

LIAR.

Ancient Lyra flinched.

Cael noticed.

"You do know."

"No."

"You hesitated."

"Because names matter."

"So does survival."

Toby stepped closer.

"Lyra."

The ancient woman looked at him.

"What is its name?"

Another heartbeat shook the mountain.

She finally whispered:

"Nhalor."

The shadows recoiled.

The entire chamber screamed.

Not Aeron.

Not the people.

The stone.

Ancient Lyra closed her eyes.

"I told you."

Toby stared.

"It reacted to its name."

"Names give shape."

Aeron's possessed body slowly descended.

AND SHAPE GIVES POWER.

Ancient Lyra's face hardened.

"Then why did you want him to ask?"

Nhalor smiled through Aeron.

BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN NAMELESS FOR THREE THOUSAND YEARS.

The heartbeat quickened.

AND NOW I REMEMBER MYSELF.

Cael looked at Toby.

"Maybe stop asking questions."

"Noted."

---

The first attack came without warning.

A shadow struck Cael.

He flew across the chamber.

"CAEL!"

Toby ran toward him.

Another tendril moved.

Gareth intercepted it.

The darkness wrapped around his sword.

Metal rusted instantly.

He dropped it.

"Don't let it touch you!"

Mira raised both hands.

Golden fire erupted from the Fourth Flame.

The shadows burned away.

Nhalor turned toward her.

INTERESTING.

Mira backed toward Seraphine.

"I don't like how he said that."

"You shouldn't," Seraphine replied.

Younger Lyra stepped beside her sister.

Her purified crest ignited.

The remaining shadows hesitated.

Mira noticed.

"Together."

Lyra nodded.

Gold from both sisters joined.

The darkness retreated.

Cael pushed himself upright.

"Now!"

He threw Kingsbane.

Toby caught the hilt.

The brothers' marks ignited.

Toby swung.

The black blade cut through Aeron's shadow wings.

Nhalor screamed.

Aeron fell.

Ancient Lyra caught him.

"Aeron!"

His eyes opened.

Gold.

"Lyra..."

"I'm here."

He grabbed her arm.

"Listen."

"We're getting you out."

"No."

"You got me out."

She froze.

"What?"

"The strike."

Aeron coughed black smoke.

"Kingsbane separated enough of him."

Toby approached.

"Can we do it again?"

"Not without killing me."

Cael joined him.

"How do you know?"

"Because Nhalor isn't possessing me."

Aeron looked toward the floor.

"I'm possessing him."

Silence.

Ancient Lyra stared.

"What does that mean?"

Aeron smiled weakly.

"Three thousand years inside the Veil."

His eyes filled with tears.

"I wasn't trapped with Nhalor."

He touched his chest.

"I trapped part of Nhalor inside myself."

Ancient Lyra understood.

"You've been holding him."

"Yes."

"All this time?"

"Yes."

Her anger disappeared.

She touched her brother's face.

"You idiot."

Aeron laughed weakly.

"You always said that."

Then his expression became urgent.

"Lyra, the tomb is opening."

"How do we close it?"

"We don't."

"What?"

"Nhalor is awake."

Aeron looked at the four younger flames.

"The old seal will never hold him again."

Gareth stepped closer.

"Then we kill him."

Aeron looked at Kingsbane.

"You can't kill something that doesn't fully exist in this world."

"Then we bring him here."

Everyone turned toward Cael.

Toby stared.

"What?"

Cael wiped blood from his mouth.

"You heard him."

Ancient Lyra shook her head.

"Absolutely not."

Cael pointed toward Aeron.

"We can't kill Nhalor because he's on the other side."

"Correct."

"So bring him through."

"That would destroy the Veil."

"Good."

"No."

Ancient Lyra approached him.

"You don't understand. If Nhalor fully crosses—"

"He gets a body."

Cael smiled grimly.

"And bodies can die."

Toby slowly understood.

"It's insane."

"Yes."

"It could destroy the world."

"Also yes."

Toby looked at his brother.

"I think I like it."

Gareth stared at both sons.

"No."

Cael sighed.

"Father."

"No."

Toby joined in.

"Father."

"Absolutely not."

Mira raised her hand.

"I think it might work."

Gareth turned.

"Nobody asked the third child."

Younger Lyra folded her arms.

"I agree with them."

Gareth closed his eyes.

"Four. I have four of these."

Seraphine almost smiled.

Then Ancient Lyra said:

"They're right."

Gareth stared at her in betrayal.

"Not you too."

"If Nhalor is awake, containment is temporary."

Ancient Lyra looked toward Aeron.

"My brother has held part of him for three thousand years."

Then the four descendants.

"We finish it."

---

Aeron explained the ritual.

The four flames would create a living anchor.

Ancient Lyra would reverse the original opening sequence.

Kingsbane would give Nhalor physical form.

Aeron would release the fragment he had carried for three millennia.

Then Nhalor would cross.

Completely.

"And after that?" Toby asked.

Aeron looked at Kingsbane.

"You strike his heart."

"Where will his heart be?"

"He will choose a form."

"Which?"

Aeron looked toward Gareth.

"The one that causes the most pain."

Nobody liked that answer.

"Why?" Mira asked.

"Because Nhalor doesn't feed on blood."

"What does he feed on?"

"Belief."

Silence.

Aeron continued.

"Fear gives him shape. Grief gives him memory. Hatred gives him strength."

Cael frowned.

"So we fight him without feeling anything?"

"No."

Aeron shook his head.

"You fight while knowing your feelings are yours."

Toby remembered the nightmares.

Nhalor could turn fear into apparent reality.

The battle would not simply be physical.

It would be against whatever each of them most believed could destroy them.

---

They prepared the ritual in the old throne chamber.

The location was Ancient Lyra's choice.

"Why here?" Edric asked.

"Because thrones concentrate belief."

Cael stared at the ruined seat.

"That sounds ridiculous."

Ancient Lyra looked at him.

"Thousands of people spent centuries believing whoever sat there possessed power."

She touched the throne.

"Belief leaves marks."

King Aldren, now stronger after Aeron removed Malachar's residue, entered supported by Edric.

Gareth frowned.

"You should still be resting."

Aldren smiled.

"You sound like my physicians."

"They're probably smarter than you."

"Usually."

Aldren looked toward the four young flames.

"What can I do?"

Toby answered.

"Believe in us."

Aldren stared at him.

Then nodded.

"That I can do."

---

The ritual began at midnight.

Toby stood north.

Cael south.

Mira east.

Younger Lyra west.

Ancient Lyra stood in the center.

Aeron beside her.

Kingsbane floated above the old throne.

Gareth and Seraphine stood outside the circle.

Neither liked it.

Neither interfered.

"Ready?" Toby asked.

Cael smiled.

"No."

Mira laughed nervously.

"Same."

Younger Lyra looked at them.

"I've known you for less than a day."

Cael shrugged.

"That's practically childhood for this family."

Even she smiled.

Ancient Lyra raised her hands.

"Begin."

Four crests ignited.

Gold filled the chamber.

Aeron screamed.

Black smoke poured from his body.

Not a Shade.

Something denser.

Older.

The smoke struck the ceiling.

The world cracked.

A vertical tear appeared in the air.

The Veil.

Behind it were stars.

Or eyes.

Nobody could tell.

Ancient Lyra began speaking the reverse sequence.

The tear widened.

Something moved behind it.

Nhalor.

No body.

Only awareness.

The entire castle shook.

Toby's knees buckled.

Cael shouted:

"Stay with me!"

"I'm here!"

Mira screamed as her mark burned.

Younger Lyra grabbed her hand.

"Don't let go!"

Aeron collapsed.

The final darkness left his mouth.

Ancient Lyra caught him.

The Veil opened completely.

Nhalor entered.

At first, nothing appeared.

Then Gareth heard a voice.

"Dad?"

He froze.

Toby.

Behind him.

Gareth turned.

Toby stood outside the circle.

Bleeding.

"Help me."

But Toby was also still inside the ritual.

Gareth understood.

Illusion.

"No."

The bleeding Toby cried.

"You promised."

Gareth closed his eyes.

"My son is in the circle."

The illusion vanished.

Seraphine saw Cael as a newborn.

Crying.

Abandoned.

"Mother."

She almost stepped toward him.

Then stopped.

"My son forgives when he's ready."

The infant vanished.

One by one, everyone faced their deepest wound.

Edric saw Queen Elara.

Aldren saw the hundreds who died during his reign.

Mira saw herself inside a laboratory jar.

Younger Lyra saw Seraphine choosing Mira over her.

Cael saw Toby wearing a crown.

Everyone kneeling.

No one seeing Cael.

Toby saw Gareth walking away with Cael, Mira, and Lyra.

Leaving him alone.

Nhalor whispered inside his mind:

YOU WERE THE ORDINARY ONE.

Toby's flame weakened.

Cael noticed.

"Toby!"

No response.

"Toby!"

The illusion showed Toby standing alone in the courtyard.

No mark.

No crown.

No importance.

Nhalor whispered:

WITHOUT THE CREST, WHO ARE YOU?

Toby looked at his empty arm.

Then smiled.

"Toby."

The illusion stopped.

"That's enough."

His crest erupted brighter than before.

Cael laughed.

"There you are."

The four flames joined.

Nhalor screamed.

The darkness collapsed inward.

A body began forming.

Tall.

Human.

Male.

Then female.

Then child.

Then old man.

Faces changed every second.

Finally, it chose.

Gareth stopped breathing.

The body became a ten-year-old boy.

Toby.

An exact copy.

Except the eyes were black.

Nhalor smiled with Toby's face.

"Better."

The real Toby stared at himself.

Cael muttered, "I preferred the giant shadow."

Nhalor reached toward Kingsbane.

The blade flew toward him.

"No!" Ancient Lyra shouted.

Cael jumped.

He caught the hilt first.

Nhalor caught the blade.

They struggled.

Black blood appeared in Nhalor's palm.

Physical blood.

Aeron had been right.

He could bleed.

"NOW!" Ancient Lyra screamed.

The four flames struck.

Nhalor staggered.

Cael ripped Kingsbane free.

Toby joined him.

Both brothers gripped the sword.

They charged.

Nhalor smiled.

Then changed faces.

Seraphine.

Gareth.

Mira.

Cael.

Finally—

Lucian.

Gareth froze.

"Father?"

Nhalor used the hesitation.

A black spear formed in his hand.

He threw it.

Not at Gareth.

At Toby.

Gareth moved.

The spear entered his chest.

Everything stopped.

"FATHER!"

Toby dropped Kingsbane.

Gareth looked down.

Black metal protruded through his armor.

Seraphine screamed.

Cael caught Gareth before he fell.

"No."

Gareth gasped.

"Stay... focused."

Toby ran toward him.

Gareth grabbed his sleeve.

"No."

"You're hurt!"

"Nhalor wants you to stop."

Blood filled Gareth's mouth.

"Don't give him what he wants."

Toby began crying.

"I can't leave you."

Gareth smiled weakly.

"Then finish quickly."

Nhalor laughed with Lucian's face.

Cael picked up Kingsbane.

His entire body shook with rage.

Aeron shouted:

"Don't feed him!"

Cael stopped.

Anger.

Hatred.

Exactly what Nhalor wanted.

Cael closed his eyes.

Then breathed.

When he opened them, he was calm.

He handed Toby one side of the hilt.

"Together?"

Toby wiped his tears.

"Together."

They charged.

Nhalor changed into Gareth.

"Don't."

Toby hesitated.

Cael did not.

"That's not him."

Toby looked toward the real Gareth bleeding in Seraphine's arms.

Then back at the imitation.

"No."

He tightened his grip.

"My father trusts me."

Kingsbane entered Nhalor's chest.

Silence.

The black eyes widened.

Mira and younger Lyra raised their hands.

Four flames converged.

Nhalor screamed.

Cracks of golden light spread across his body.

Ancient Lyra shouted:

"Finish it!"

Toby and Cael pushed the blade deeper.

Nhalor's body shattered.

Black fragments exploded across the throne chamber.

Then froze.

One by one, they turned to ash.

The Veil snapped shut.

Silence.

No heartbeat.

No shadows.

No voices.

Toby released the sword.

"We did it."

Ancient Lyra stared at the ash.

She did not smile.

Cael noticed.

"What?"

Aeron slowly stood.

His face was pale.

"No."

Toby's relief disappeared.

"What?"

Aeron looked toward the closed Veil.

"He crossed completely."

"Yes."

"And we killed him."

"No."

Ancient Lyra knelt beside the ash.

She touched it.

Her hand trembled.

"This isn't Nhalor."

Cael stared.

"We watched him die."

"We watched a body die."

Toby felt cold.

Aeron looked toward the four siblings.

"Nhalor feeds on belief."

Silence.

Mira whispered:

"So if we believed that body was him..."

"We gave it enough reality to die."

"But where is the real Nhalor?"

Aeron looked toward Gareth.

Everyone turned.

Seraphine was pressing both hands against Gareth's wound.

"Gareth!"

His eyes were closed.

"Toby, help me!"

Toby ran.

Then stopped.

The black spear was gone.

The wound was closing.

By itself.

Seraphine backed away.

"Gareth?"

His eyes opened.

Gold.

Toby exhaled.

"Father."

Gareth slowly sat up.

He looked at the healed wound.

Then at his hands.

A smile appeared.

Seraphine froze.

Because Gareth never smiled like that.

Cael raised Kingsbane.

"Get away from him."

Toby stared.

"What?"

Cael's face went white.

"Gareth doesn't heal."

Seraphine stepped backward.

"Gareth?"

He looked at her.

The golden eyes slowly turned black.

Nhalor smiled through Gareth's face.

"You believed I was dying."

Toby stopped breathing.

Nhalor rose inside his father's body.

"So I let him."

He placed one hand over Gareth's heart.

"And while all of you were watching the monster..."

His smile widened.

"...I entered the man you trusted most."
