Chapter 11 - Ruth's Heir

“My mother was a nurse.”

The sentence sounded absurdly small in the underground room.

Senator William Cross smiled.

“Ruth Carter was many things.”

“Not this.”

“You're still thinking of Project Eve as Arthur's creation.”

“Wasn't it?”

“Arthur financed it. Samuel built parts of it. I protected it when necessary.”

Cross glanced at Anna.

“But Ruth understood what it could become.”

I looked at Anna.

“Tell me he's lying.”

Anna's gun remained pointed at Michael.

She didn't answer.

That hurt more than an immediate confession would have.

Claire stepped toward her aunt.

“Anna.”

“Stay where you are.”

“You called my mother.”

“Yes.”

“You helped Ruth switch the babies.”

“Yes.”

“You spent twenty-four years hiding.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Anna finally looked at Claire.

“Because we failed.”

“At what?”

“Stopping Arthur.”

Cross laughed softly.

Anna's eyes hardened.

“Don't mistake my presence here for loyalty, William.”

That changed his expression.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

So did Michael.

Cross recovered.

“You came willingly.”

“I came because you have Samuel.”

The room went still.

Jonathan whispered, “Samuel is alive.”

Anna looked at him.

“Barely.”

“Where?”

Cross answered.

“Safe.”

Anna gave him a disgusted look.

“There is nothing safe about where you keep people.”

Cross ignored her.

He looked at Claire.

“We need the third key.”

Claire touched the scar along her jaw.

“You're not cutting anything out of me.”

“No one needs to.”

“Then how?”

Anna lowered her gun slightly.

“It's probably subdermal.”

“A chip?”

“Not exactly. In the late nineties, Samuel experimented with encapsulated microfilm and later storage prototypes.”

Michael frowned.

“You expect us to believe Ruth hid data inside Claire's face?”

“Ruth didn't perform the procedure.”

“Samuel did.”

“Yes.”

Claire looked sick.

“He told me he was removing glass.”

“He removed glass too.”

Claire touched the scar again.

“You knew?”

“No.”

“Then how can you be sure?”

“Because Ruth left instructions.”

“Where?”

Anna looked at me.

“With me.”

So there really were three pieces.

My location.

Anna's instructions.

Claire's physical key.

Cross extended his hand.

“Enough family history. The key.”

Anna didn't move.

Cross's armed men raised their weapons.

Jonathan stepped in front of Daniel.

Michael shifted closer to Margaret.

Claire stood beside me.

The room divided itself without anyone discussing it.

Cross smiled.

“How touching.”

I looked at Anna.

“You said Ruth wanted to complete Project Eve.”

Cross had said it.

Anna hadn't.

Her eyes met mine.

“No.”

Cross's smile disappeared.

There.

The first crack.

“What did she want?” I asked.

Anna answered carefully.

“To control it.”

“That sounds like the same thing.”

“It wasn't.”

“Explain.”

“Project Eve wasn't just a list of stolen identities.”

Anna lowered the pistol completely.

“It was a network.”

“What kind?”

“Judges. Doctors. lawyers. politicians. executives. adoptive parents. biological parents. children who grew up under false names.”

Cross said, “Anna.”

She ignored him.

“Arthur understood that whoever controlled those records could control thousands of people.”

“How many?”

“We never knew.”

“Hundreds?”

“Possibly.”

“Thousands?”

Anna hesitated.

“Across thirty years? Yes.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You're talking about organized blackmail.”

“Among other things.”

“And Ruth wanted that power?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“She realized destroying the registry would also destroy the only evidence many of those people had of who they really were.”

I understood.

“If she exposed everything publicly…”

“Victims would be exposed with the criminals.”

“Children who didn't know they were adopted.”

“Yes.”

“Families.”

“Yes.”

“People whose biological parents were dangerous.”

“Yes.”

Cross looked impatient.

“Ruth was sentimental.”

Anna turned on him.

“Ruth was smarter than all of you.”

Cross's face hardened.

“She wanted a custodian.”

I looked at Anna.

“Someone who could decide what information should be released.”

“Yes.”

“Case by case.”

“Yes.”

“That's what Cross means by heir.”

“Yes.”

I felt suddenly ill.

“Who did Ruth choose?”

Nobody answered.

Then Cross smiled.

“You.”

“No.”

“She raised you for it.”

“No.”

“You think she taught you to notice people by accident?”

I remembered Ruth.

Never trust the loudest person in the room.

Watch who looks away when someone lies.

People tell you who they are when they think you can't see them.

Childhood lessons.

I had thought they were simply Ruth being Ruth.

Cross continued.

“She taught you to remember details. To question stories. To survive without depending on wealth.”

“Stop.”

“She kept you outside the Harrington family because she wanted someone the system hadn't corrupted.”

“Stop.”

“She chose you because you weren't one of them.”

I looked at Anna.

“Is that true?”

Her silence was devastating.

“Did Ruth raise me to inherit Project Eve?”

“She raised you to have a choice.”

“That isn't the same thing.”

“No.”

“What choice?”

“To destroy it, expose it, or protect the people inside it.”

Cross spread his hands.

“Exactly.”

I stared at him.

“And you want me to give it to you.”

“I want stability.”

“You want blackmail.”

“I want civilization to continue functioning.”

Daniel laughed.

“That's a remarkably elegant way to describe extortion.”

Cross looked at him.

“Your family's fortune exists because people like me kept unpleasant truths from becoming public.”

“My family's fortune appears to exist because my grandfather was a monster.”

“Both can be true.”

Margaret suddenly spoke.

“William.”

Cross turned.

She had been silent since he entered.

Now she looked almost calm.

“You still talk too much.”

Cross smiled.

“And you still underestimate me.”

“No.”

Margaret's gaze moved toward Anna.

“I underestimated her.”

Anna's face changed.

Margaret continued.

“Ruth never trusted Anna with the instructions.”

Claire looked at her aunt.

“What?”

Anna raised the gun again.

Margaret smiled sadly.

“She gave you something, didn't she?”

Anna didn't answer.

“But not the real instructions.”

Cross looked at Anna.

“Is that true?”

“No.”

Too fast.

I recognized it immediately.

Margaret did too.

“Ruth knew Anna loved Samuel.”

Anna's jaw tightened.

“There it is,” Margaret whispered.

“The weakness.”

“Samuel is my brother.”

“And you would burn the world to save him.”

Anna aimed at Margaret.

“You know nothing about what I would do.”

“I know exactly what you did.”

Claire stepped between them.

“Stop!”

Anna lowered the weapon slightly.

Margaret looked at me.

“The real instructions aren't with Anna.”

“Then where?”

“Ruth gave them to me.”

Cross's composure vanished.

“You?”

“Yes.”

“Impossible.”

“You always thought Ruth hated me.”

“She did.”

“She did.”

Margaret almost smiled.

“But she trusted my guilt.”

That sentence silenced everyone.

“Where are they?” I asked.

Margaret looked at my locket.

“Not yet.”

Cross raised his hand.

One of his men grabbed Daniel.

Jonathan reacted instantly.

A weapon pressed against Daniel's neck.

“Don't,” Cross said.

Jonathan froze.

“Enough games.”

Cross looked at Margaret.

“Instructions.”

“No.”

“William,” Margaret said, “you didn't survive Arthur by becoming more frightening than he was.”

“No?”

“You survived because everyone thought you were useful.”

His face hardened.

“And now?”

“Now you're an old man standing in Arthur Harrington's basement trying to steal instructions from dead women.”

Michael almost smiled.

Cross didn't.

He nodded once.

The man holding Daniel struck him behind the knee.

Daniel fell.

Jonathan lunged.

Another gun turned toward him.

“Stop!” I shouted.

Cross looked at me.

“Then cooperate.”

I stepped forward.

“What do you actually need?”

“The complete registry.”

“Why now?”

“Because someone else is rebuilding it.”

That surprised everyone.

Even Anna.

“What?”

Cross looked irritated with himself for revealing too much.

I pressed.

“Project Eve still exists.”

“No.”

“Then what is being rebuilt?”

“A successor.”

“By whom?”

“I don't know.”

Michael laughed.

“You expect us to believe that?”

Cross looked at him.

“You think I kidnapped you?”

Michael's expression changed.

“What?”

“The people who raised you inside the program were not mine.”

Michael went still.

“Samuel—”

“Samuel thought he was working for Arthur.”

Cross smiled.

“Arthur thought Samuel worked for him.”

“Who did he actually work for?”

Cross looked around the room.

“That is the question that has kept several of us alive much longer than expected.”

A sound came from upstairs.

One gunshot.

Then another.

Cross's men turned.

The lights went out.

Someone screamed.

I dropped.

Gunfire erupted.

A hand grabbed me.

I fought.

“Emily!”

Claire.

We crawled behind the fireplace.

Another shot.

Then emergency lights came on.

One of Cross's men was down.

Michael had a gun now.

Jonathan had another.

Daniel was free.

Anna had disappeared.

Cross stood behind Margaret with a pistol against her neck.

“Enough!”

Everyone froze.

“Drop them.”

Jonathan lowered his gun.

Michael didn't.

Cross pressed the barrel harder against Margaret.

“Michael.”

Margaret looked at her son.

“Don't.”

Michael's hand shook.

“Mother.”

The word sounded foreign in his mouth.

Margaret smiled at him.

For the first time, there was no Harrington calculation in her face.

Only grief.

“I didn't sign that transfer.”

Michael swallowed.

“Prove it.”

“I can't.”

“Then don't ask me to believe you.”

“I don't.”

That surprised him.

Margaret continued.

“I ask you to survive long enough to decide for yourself.”

Michael slowly lowered the gun.

Cross smiled.

“Good.”

Then Margaret drove her heel into his foot.

Cross cursed.

She twisted.

Jonathan fired.

The bullet struck Cross's shoulder.

He fell.

Chaos again.

Michael tackled one guard.

Daniel hit another.

I ran toward Margaret.

Claire reached Cross first.

He lay against the wall, bleeding.

His pistol had fallen several feet away.

Claire picked it up.

She pointed it at him.

Cross looked at her.

“Claire.”

She was shaking.

“Was it you?”

He stared.

“At the estate.”

Everyone stopped.

Claire's voice cracked.

“Was it you?”

Cross's face changed.

“No.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

“You were there.”

“Yes.”

“You protected whoever did it.”

Cross said nothing.

Claire cocked the weapon.

“Who?”

Margaret whispered, “Claire.”

“No.”

Claire's tears fell.

“For twenty-four years I thought Jonathan was Evelyn's father.”

Jonathan closed his eyes.

“I wanted him to be.”

Claire looked at Cross.

“You knew he wasn't.”

“Yes.”

“Who was?”

“I never saw the final result.”

“You're lying.”

Cross looked almost amused despite the blood.

“No. For once, Margaret and I are telling the same truth.”

Claire pressed the barrel against his forehead.

“Give me a name.”

Cross stared at her.

Then whispered:

“Samuel.”

Anna's brother.

The doctor.

Claire recoiled.

“No.”

“Not as the father.”

She stopped.

“As the man who performed the test.”

“Where is the result?”

Cross smiled weakly.

“Ask Anna.”

A shot exploded.

Cross's body jerked.

Blood appeared across his chest.

Claire screamed.

We turned.

Anna stood at the staircase.

Smoke curled from her pistol.

Cross looked down at the wound.

Then at Anna.

“You…”

Anna fired again.

Cross collapsed.

Jonathan raised his weapon.

Anna dropped hers.

“I had to.”

“Why?” I shouted.

“Because he was going to tell you the wrong name.”

Claire stared at her.

“What name?”

Anna began crying.

“I'm sorry.”

“What name?”

Anna looked at Claire.

“The test was completed.”

Claire's face went white.

“You saw it?”

“Yes.”

“Who was Evelyn's father?”

Anna shook her head.

“Evelyn wasn't your baby.”

Nobody moved.

Claire whispered, “What?”

I felt cold.

“We already know the identities were switched.”

“No.”

Anna looked at me.

“You still don't understand.”

She pointed toward Claire.

“Claire's baby died.”

Vanessa.

My mind rejected it instantly.

“No.”

“Shortly after delivery.”

“No.”

“Ruth tried to save her.”

“No.”

“Evelyn Harrington died at 2:16 a.m.”

Claire made a sound I will never forget.

Not a scream.

Something deeper.

A mother hearing her child die twenty-three years late.

She collapsed.

Jonathan caught her.

I stared at Anna.

“Then who is Vanessa?”

Anna covered her mouth.

“Mine.”

Everything stopped.

“Your daughter?”

“Yes.”

“You said your daughter died.”

“I was told she did.”

“Then Victor raised your daughter?”

“Yes.”

“Did he know?”

“No.”

“Who switched her?”

Anna looked toward Margaret.

Margaret shook her head.

“No.”

Anna whispered:

“Ruth.”

I couldn't breathe.

Why?

Why would Ruth replace Claire's dead baby with Anna's living child?

“Why?”

“To protect her.”

“From whom?”

“Samuel.”

“Her uncle?”

Anna began crying harder.

“My brother wasn't protecting the children.”

“What was he doing?”

“He was selecting them.”

“For Project Eve?”

“Yes.”

“And your daughter?”

“He chose her.”

“Why?”

Anna looked at the blood on the floor.

“Because of her father.”

There it was again.

Paternity.

Always paternity.

“Who was Vanessa's father?”

Anna looked at Margaret.

Margaret stared back.

And suddenly I realized Margaret already knew.

“You know.”

Margaret didn't deny it.

“Who?” I demanded.

Margaret whispered:

“Edward Mercer.”

I stared.

“Anna's brother?”

Anna closed her eyes.

Daniel looked horrified.

“Your daughter was fathered by your brother?”

“No!”

Anna shouted so violently that Claire flinched.

“No. Edward was not my biological brother.”

Another false family relationship.

Another hidden bloodline.

Anna continued.

“My parents adopted Edward as a child.”

“Then who was he biologically?”

Margaret answered.

“Arthur Harrington's first son.”

Silence.

Arthur had another son.

Older than Jonathan.

Hidden.

“Arthur's son fathered Vanessa.”

“Yes.”

“Which makes Vanessa…”

Daniel finished.

“Arthur's granddaughter.”

Michael stared at Margaret.

“And me?”

Nobody answered.

He understood.

“If Victor is my father, then I'm not biologically Harrington at all.”

Margaret stepped toward him.

“You are my son.”

“That wasn't what I asked.”

“No.”

Michael laughed bitterly.

“So the child raised inside Project Eve wasn't even the bloodline Arthur wanted.”

Anna looked at him.

“That is why Ruth switched you too.”

Michael stopped.

“What?”

The room froze again.

He stared at Anna.

“Switched me with whom?”

Anna looked terrified.

“Michael…”

“WITH WHOM?”

Margaret's face drained of color.

I remembered Jonathan's letter.

The switch began before the babies were born.

Two pregnant women.

But perhaps we had misunderstood that too.

Anna whispered:

“Margaret's biological son never entered Project Eve.”

Michael's gun lowered.

“What are you saying?”

“You were another child.”

“Whose?”

Anna looked at Jonathan.

Jonathan suddenly seemed to understand.

“No.”

Daniel looked at his father.

“What?”

Jonathan backed away.

“No.”

“What is it?”

Anna's voice broke.

“Jonathan had a son before Daniel.”

Daniel stared.

“With whom?”

Jonathan didn't answer.

Anna did.

“Ruth Carter.”

I felt the air leave my lungs.

My mother.

Jonathan.

A child.

Michael stared at him.

“No.”

Jonathan closed his eyes.

Michael whispered:

“I'm your son?”

Jonathan looked at him.

Tears filled his eyes.

“Yes.”

Margaret grabbed the wall.

Michael backed away as if everyone had become poisonous.

“And Margaret's baby?”

Anna looked toward Daniel.

This time Jonathan understood before the rest of us.

His face became pure terror.

“Anna, don't.”

She ignored him.

“Margaret's son was given to another family.”

“Which family?” I asked.

Anna looked at Daniel.

“The Harrington family.”

Daniel laughed once.

Confused.

“I am already a Harrington.”

Anna shook her head.

“No, Daniel.”

Jonathan whispered, “Please.”

But the truth was already moving.

Anna looked directly at Daniel.

“Jonathan isn't your biological father.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

Anna continued.

“You are Margaret's missing son.”

Michael stared at him.

So did I.

Margaret's knees gave way.

Daniel caught her instinctively.

She looked up at the man she had called her grandson his entire life.

Then she touched his face.

“My baby,” she whispered.

Daniel recoiled.

“No.”

Margaret began sobbing.

And in the middle of the ruined underground nursery, with William Cross bleeding on the floor and every family relationship we knew collapsing around us, Anna delivered the final blow.

“Victor Lang is your father.”
