Chapter 11 - The First King Awakens
# Chapter 11 - The First King Awakens
The first thing the ancient king destroyed was the sky.
A thunderous crack split the vaulted ceiling of the Great Basilica of Saint Valerius, sending enormous blocks of stone crashing toward the sanctuary floor. Beyond the shattered roof, the morning sky had turned black, and a vast golden eye stared down upon the kingdom.
Toby stood motionless at the edge of the abyss.
The creature beneath the basilica had risen far enough for its shadow to cover the entire sanctuary. Its body seemed to exist between flesh and darkness, surrounded by enormous coils of black smoke that moved like living serpents.
And the terrible voice continued echoing inside his mind.
My children. My blood. My kingdom.
Toby looked toward his father.
King Alaric stood beneath the collapsing altar, clutching the broken Crown of Ashes. His face was pale, his armor shattered, and black veins still spread across his neck where the ancient entity had possessed him.
"You said it was the first king," Toby whispered.
Alaric looked toward the enormous golden eyes.
"Yes."
"But Queen Aurelia founded the kingdom."
"She founded the dynasty."
Another section of the ceiling collapsed.
Ser Kaelen rushed forward, raising his damaged shield over Toby and Elara.
"Move!"
Stone exploded against the shield.
The ancient knight staggered, but held his ground.
Alaric continued, his voice strained.
"Before the First Dynasty, before the seven kingdoms, there was one ruler. A being worshipped as the source of all royal power."
Toby stared into the abyss.
"The First Hunger?"
Alaric nodded.
"That was the name given to it after the people discovered what it demanded."
"What did it demand?"
The king looked at his son.
"Everything."
Across the sanctuary, Queen Seraphine struggled to stand.
Mara supported her while Malrec helped carry Brother Alden's body away from the widening cracks.
The old monk was gone.
Mara knew it.
Yet she refused to leave him beneath the collapsing cathedral.
"Put him down," Malrec urged. "We cannot carry him through the lower passage."
Mara's eyes flashed.
"He carried me when I was a child."
"Mara—"
"He carried Toby through winter storms. He fed the hungry. He sheltered strangers."
Her voice broke.
"He made terrible mistakes, but he was still my father."
Malrec fell silent.
Then he adjusted his grip beneath Alden's shoulders.
"Then we carry him together."
Mara looked at him.
For the first time, the inquisitor's expression held no authority.
Only grief.
She nodded.
Together, they moved toward the western staircase.
But before they reached it, the enormous golden eye above the sanctuary turned toward them.
A voice whispered inside Mara's mind.
Daughter of the broken oath.
She froze.
Malrec noticed.
"What is it?"
The voice continued.
Your father died believing you hated him.
Mara's breath caught.
Would you like to speak with him again?
A warm sensation spread through her chest.
For one impossible moment, she heard Brother Alden's familiar voice.
"Mara, my little girl..."
She turned sharply.
Her father's body lay motionless.
But the voice came again.
"Forgive me."
Tears filled her eyes.
"Father?"
Malrec seized her shoulder.
"Do not listen."
Mara barely heard him.
The voice became tender.
I can return him to you.
She looked toward the golden eye.
"What do you want?"
Malrec's face drained of color.
"Mara, no!"
The ancient king answered.
Only your loyalty.
Mara looked down at Alden.
His hands were cold.
His face was peaceful.
For twelve years, she had wanted nothing more than to hear him apologize.
Now she would never hear his voice again.
Unless...
She closed her eyes.
Then she whispered, "No."
The warmth vanished.
The voice became colder.
You would abandon him again?
Mara opened her eyes.
"No."
She looked toward the body in her arms.
"I am letting him rest."
The golden eye narrowed.
For a moment, the sanctuary trembled.
Then the voice withdrew.
Malrec exhaled shakily.
Mara wiped her tears.
"Help me carry him."
At the center of the ruined sanctuary, the First King began rising.
Its immense body was covered in scales resembling polished black stone. Seven broken crowns floated around its head, each connected to the creature by chains of molten gold.
Its arms were impossibly long.
Its fingers ended in curved claws.
And within its chest burned a golden fire identical to the Crownfire that had awakened inside Toby.
Elara stared at the creature.
"Why does it have his power?"
Alaric turned toward her.
"Because the Crownfire came from it."
Toby felt cold.
"No."
The king's expression darkened.
"Queen Aurelia did not create the Crownfire. She stole it."
The ancient creature laughed.
Stole?
The sound shook the sanctuary.
She begged for it.
The golden eye turned toward Toby.
Four hundred years ago, your ancestor came to me with a kingdom drowning in blood.
A vision suddenly filled the air.
Toby saw a young Queen Aurelia kneeling before an enormous golden throne.
Around her lay the bodies of fallen soldiers.
Her crown was broken.
Her hands were covered in blood.
She asked me for victory.
The vision shifted.
Aurelia stood before seven armies.
Golden fire erupted from her hands.
Thousands of soldiers knelt.
I gave her the power to unite the kingdoms.
Toby watched in horror as the vision changed again.
Aurelia stood inside a vast ceremonial chamber.
Seven children knelt before her.
Their faces were hidden beneath white veils.
But every gift has a price.
The queen raised a golden blade.
Toby turned away.
"No..."
The vision vanished.
The First King spoke again.
Your ancestor betrayed our covenant. She took my power, divided my essence, and imprisoned me beneath the world.
Alaric raised the broken Crown of Ashes.
"And you spent four hundred years corrupting her descendants."
The creature laughed.
I merely reminded them of the price.
Toby looked toward the golden fire burning within its chest.
For the first time, he understood why the power inside him had always felt alive.
It was not simply magic.
It was a fragment of something ancient.
Something that wanted to return home.
Elara stepped closer to Toby.
"We need to leave."
He shook his head.
"Mother is still down there."
Far below, Lysandra remained trapped inside the damaged golden cage.
Her translucent form flickered as cracks spread across its walls.
Elara looked toward her.
Then toward Cassian, who stood near the broken columns.
"Father!"
Cassian turned.
"Elara!"
"Help us get her out!"
He looked toward the abyss.
The golden cage hung above an endless darkness, suspended by four chains attached to the shattered foundations of the basilica.
"There's no way down."
Ser Kaelen approached.
"There is."
Everyone turned.
The knight pointed toward the eastern gallery.
"A service passage leads beneath the original altar. It was used by the royal priests."
Malrec looked up.
"That passage was sealed centuries ago."
Kaelen nodded.
"By my order."
Toby stared at him.
"Can you open it?"
The knight looked toward the First King.
"Perhaps."
Alaric stepped forward.
"I will hold the creature."
Lysandra's voice echoed from below.
"Alaric, no!"
The king looked down.
For a moment, his expression softened.
"My love."
"You cannot fight it alone!"
"I know."
He turned toward Toby.
"Son, listen carefully. The Crownfire can be divided, but it cannot be destroyed by ordinary means."
Toby nodded.
"The First Oath."
"Yes."
"The power was meant to be shared."
Alaric's expression changed.
"Who told you that?"
"Queen Aurelia."
The king froze.
"You spoke with her?"
Toby nodded.
"Inside my mind."
Alaric looked toward the enormous golden eye.
For the first time, something like hope crossed his face.
"Then perhaps she left us a way to end this."
The First King suddenly roared.
ENOUGH.
A colossal hand struck the sanctuary floor.
The impact shattered the central aisle.
Everyone was thrown backward.
Toby hit the ground hard.
Elara fell beside him.
The golden cage below swung violently.
Lysandra screamed.
One of its supporting chains snapped.
Alaric turned.
"Lysandra!"
The cage tilted.
Another chain broke.
Toby scrambled to his feet.
"Mother!"
He raised his hand.
Golden fire erupted toward the falling cage.
But the First King moved faster.
A black claw swept through the air.
It struck Toby across the chest.
The boy flew backward.
He crashed against a broken column.
Pain exploded through his body.
Elara screamed.
"TOBY!"
She rushed toward him.
He tried to stand.
His legs refused.
Blood trickled from his mouth.
The First King lowered its enormous head.
You carry my fire, little heir.
Toby struggled to breathe.
And now I will take it back.
The creature extended one claw toward Toby.
Golden light began pouring from the boy's chest.
He screamed.
The Crownfire was being torn from his body.
Elara seized his hand.
"Hold on!"
The light intensified.
Toby's skin grew cold.
His vision blurred.
He could hear his sister crying.
But her voice sounded distant.
The First King laughed.
At last.
Then another hand closed around Toby's wrist.
Seraphine.
The queen knelt beside him.
Her silver hair whipped around her face.
"Take mine."
Golden light erupted from her body.
The First King recoiled.
SERAPHINE.
She looked toward the creature.
"For twelve years, I allowed fear to rule my family."
Her voice trembled.
"I believed sacrifice was the only way to protect the kingdom."
The golden light grew brighter.
"But I was wrong."
Alaric stared at her.
"Mother—"
Seraphine looked toward him.
"Protect your children."
Then she pressed both hands against Toby's chest.
The Crownfire surged.
The creature screamed.
Its golden eye narrowed.
YOU CANNOT DEFY ME.
Seraphine smiled sadly.
"Watch me."
A pillar of golden fire erupted around her.
Toby felt warmth return to his body.
His breathing steadied.
The pain faded.
But Seraphine began changing.
Her skin turned pale.
Her silver hair became white.
Deep lines spread across her face.
Toby stared.
"Grandmother?"
She looked down at him.
For one brief moment, she smiled.
"You have your mother's eyes."
Then her body dissolved into golden light.
Toby screamed.
"NO!"
The light flowed into his chest.
The First King staggered backward.
Its enormous body cracked along the shoulders.
One of the floating crowns shattered.
Seraphine was gone.
And Toby understood that she had given her remaining life to save him.
For several seconds, the sanctuary was silent.
Then Alaric fell to his knees.
"Mother..."
He looked toward the place where Seraphine had stood.
Nothing remained.
Only a small golden key lay upon the floor.
Toby crawled toward it.
He picked it up.
The metal was warm.
His grandmother had carried it for years.
The key to Blackthorn Palace.
The key that might lead them to his mother's living body.
Toby closed his fingers around it.
Then he stood.
Elara looked at him.
His eyes were no longer filled with fear.
They were filled with determination.
"We're not losing anyone else."
Alaric slowly rose.
"Then we must act quickly."
The First King was recovering.
Cracks across its body were closing.
The remaining floating crowns began rotating around its head.
Kaelen approached.
"The eastern passage is open."
Mara and Malrec appeared behind him, having carried Alden's body to a protected alcove near the western stairs.
Cassian joined them.
His expression was grim.
"The city is evacuating. The palace guard is approaching."
Alaric looked toward the shattered roof.
"Then we have little time."
Toby turned toward the abyss.
"First, we save Mother."
The eastern passage descended through narrow tunnels beneath the basilica.
Toby led the way, carrying the golden key.
Elara followed closely.
Behind them came Kaelen, Mara, Malrec, and Cassian.
Alaric remained above to delay the First King.
The sound of battle echoed through the stone.
Each impact shook dust from the ceiling.
Toby wanted to turn back.
But he remembered his father's words.
Protect your mother.
He kept moving.
At the end of the passage stood an ancient iron door.
Seven locks covered its surface.
Toby approached.
The golden key began glowing.
One by one, the locks opened.
Elara stared.
"How did you know it would work?"
Toby shook his head.
"I didn't."
The door swung inward.
Beyond it lay a narrow bridge suspended above the abyss.
At the far end hung Lysandra's golden cage.
Only one chain remained intact.
The cage swayed dangerously.
"Mother!" Toby shouted.
Lysandra raised her head.
"Tobias!"
He ran across the bridge.
Elara followed.
Kaelen remained near the entrance, watching the darkness below.
Something was moving beneath them.
Something separate from the First King.
He tightened his grip around his sword.
"Be quick."
Toby reached the cage.
His mother pressed her translucent hand against the golden bars.
"My little star."
Tears filled his eyes.
"I'm here."
Lysandra smiled.
"You've grown so much."
Toby placed his hand against the cage.
Golden light spread across the bars.
They began dissolving.
Elara stepped closer.
"Mother?"
Lysandra turned.
For a moment, she simply stared.
Then her expression crumpled.
"Elara."
The girl began crying.
"I thought you were dead."
Lysandra reached toward her.
"Oh, my darling..."
The bars vanished.
Elara embraced the glowing figure.
For one impossible moment, Lysandra's spirit became solid enough to hold her daughter.
Toby joined them.
The three clung to one another as the bridge trembled beneath their feet.
For the first time, Toby felt what it meant to belong to a family.
Then Lysandra suddenly stiffened.
Her expression changed.
"No..."
Toby looked up.
"Mother?"
She stared at the golden key in his hand.
"Where did you get that?"
"Grandmother gave it to me."
Lysandra's face drained of color.
"Seraphine?"
Toby nodded.
"She saved me."
Lysandra closed her eyes.
Tears slipped down her cheeks.
Then she whispered, "Tobias, that key was never meant to open Blackthorn Palace."
He frowned.
"What?"
She looked toward the darkness beneath the bridge.
"It opens something far older."
The golden key began vibrating.
A deep mechanical sound echoed from below.
Kaelen turned sharply.
"No..."
The abyss beneath the bridge began glowing.
A colossal stone door emerged from the darkness.
Its surface was covered in seven intertwined dragons.
At its center was a keyhole shaped exactly like the golden key.
Toby stared.
"Mother, what is that?"
Lysandra's voice trembled.
"The original throne room."
Elara looked toward the enormous door.
"Of Queen Aurelia?"
Lysandra shook her head.
"No."
The door began opening.
A brilliant golden light erupted through the widening gap.
And from within came a voice that made Toby's blood turn cold.
Welcome home, Tobias.
The same voice he had heard inside the white hall.
Queen Aurelia.
But this time, it sounded different.
Stronger.
Closer.
Lysandra seized his shoulders.
"Listen to me. The First King was never the only being imprisoned beneath this kingdom."
Toby stared at her.
"What do you mean?"
His mother looked toward the opening door.
Her face was filled with terror.
"Queen Aurelia did not divide the First Hunger into two halves."
The golden light intensified.
"She divided herself."
Toby felt the Crownfire pulse inside his chest.
Lysandra continued.
"One half became the guardian of the prison."
"And the other?"
His mother closed her eyes.
"The other became the hunger."
The enormous door opened completely.
Beyond it stood a golden throne.
Upon the throne sat a woman wearing a crown of seven stars.
Her silver hair flowed over a white gown.
Her face was identical to the woman Toby had met inside his mind.
Queen Aurelia.
She opened her eyes.
And smiled.
"At last, my heir. You have brought me the key to my freedom."
Behind Toby, the bridge began collapsing.
And from the golden throne, Queen Aurelia whispered:
"Now choose, Tobias. Save your family—or save the world."
