# Chapter 8 - The King Beneath the World

The voice rising from the abyss belonged to a man Toby had never met, yet something deep within his blood recognized it.

"At last, my son. You have come to set me free."

The words rolled through the shattered sanctuary, silencing the screams of the wounded and the frantic commands of the soldiers.

Toby stood at the edge of the enormous fissure, golden flames circling his trembling hands.

Far below, his mother hung inside a cage of radiant light.

And beyond her, something was moving.

Something enormous.

Something that had waited in darkness for twelve years.

"Father?" Toby whispered.

The darkness answered with a low, almost sorrowful laugh.

"Yes, Tobias."

Princess Lysandra struggled against the chains binding her wrists.

"Don't listen to him!"

Toby looked down.

"Mother, you said he was alive!"

"He is!"

"Then why can't I save him?"

Lysandra's expression twisted with anguish.

"Because the man you are hearing is not the man I married."

The voice from below became colder.

"Lysandra. Must you poison our son's heart before he has even seen my face?"

Ser Kaelen stepped toward the fissure, his ancient sword raised.

"Your Majesty."

The voice laughed.

"Kaelen Veyr. Still hiding behind your sword?"

The knight's expression hardened.

"I should have ended this twelve years ago."

"You tried."

A deep rumble shook the basilica.

Several remaining stained-glass windows shattered.

Toby stumbled backward as a black iron chain rose from the abyss.

It was thicker than a tree trunk, covered in glowing silver runes.

At its center hung a massive lock shaped like a seven-pointed crown.

The seventh chain.

The last unbroken binding.

Toby stared at it.

His golden fire reached toward the lock as though drawn by an invisible force.

"Stop!" Lysandra screamed.

He pulled his hand back.

The flames resisted.

For one terrifying moment, Toby felt as though something else controlled his fingers.

Then Elara seized his wrist.

"Toby!"

He turned.

His sister stood beside him, pale and frightened, her dark hair disheveled and blood staining the sleeve of her dress.

"Look at me," she whispered.

The golden fire flickered.

"Elara..."

"Whatever is down there, we don't have to believe it."

Toby looked toward the abyss.

"But he's my father."

Elara tightened her grip.

"And I'm your sister."

Her voice broke.

"You just found me. Please don't disappear now."

The fire around Toby's hand slowly diminished.

From the darkness, the man's voice became almost tender.

"How touching. My two children, reunited at last."

Elara froze.

Toby turned sharply.

"Two?"

The voice laughed.

"Of course. Did your grandmother neglect to tell you?"

Queen Seraphine stood near the broken altar.

Her face had gone white.

"Do not speak to them."

The voice ignored her.

"Elara, my beautiful daughter. I remember the day you were born."

Elara stepped backward.

"No."

"You had your mother's eyes."

"Stop."

"And when I held you, you wrapped your tiny fingers around mine."

Elara's lips trembled.

Cassian, standing among the remaining soldiers, suddenly lowered his head.

The voice continued.

"Your mother named you Elara because she said you were brighter than the morning star."

Elara looked toward Lysandra.

"Mother?"

The imprisoned woman closed her eyes.

A tear slipped down her cheek.

"Yes."

Elara's breathing became uneven.

"He's my father too?"

Lysandra whispered, "He was."

The answer struck the girl like a blade.

The man who had supposedly been dead before she could remember him was alive beneath the basilica.

And the man who had raised her had tried to sacrifice her brother to keep him imprisoned.

Nothing in her life had been what it seemed.

Near the shattered altar, Mara knelt beside Brother Alden.

His breathing was shallow.

The black spear of magic had left a terrible wound through his chest, and the blood soaking his robes had begun to darken.

Mara pressed both hands against the injury.

"Stay with me."

Alden's eyes fluttered.

"Mara..."

"Don't speak."

He managed a faint smile.

"You sound like your mother."

Mara's hands trembled.

"Please."

Malrec approached, his expression grim.

"He needs a healer."

Mara looked up.

"Then find one!"

The inquisitor hesitated.

"The basilica is collapsing."

"Then carry him out!"

Malrec looked toward the abyss.

Something in the darkness had begun whispering his name.

He clenched his jaw.

Then he knelt beside Alden.

"Help me lift him."

Mara stared at him.

For years, Malrec had treated her father with contempt.

Now he was offering to save him.

"Why?" she asked.

Malrec's expression hardened.

"Because I have spent my life obeying men who called cruelty a sacred duty."

He looked toward the crimson light.

"And I am beginning to suspect they were never serving anything sacred."

Together, they lifted Alden onto a broken wooden door.

But before they could move, the old monk seized Malrec's sleeve.

"The records..."

Malrec leaned closer.

"What records?"

Alden struggled to breathe.

"Under the eastern altar. The black ledger."

Malrec froze.

"What ledger?"

"The names of the children."

Mara stared at her father.

"What children?"

Alden closed his eyes.

"All of them."

The darkness beneath the basilica began to rise.

At first, Toby thought it was smoke.

Then he realized it had shape.

A towering figure emerged from the abyss, its body wrapped in black chains and fragments of shattered armor.

A crown of seven broken spikes rested upon its head.

Toby recognized the crown.

It was identical to the one carved above the sealed royal chamber.

The figure's face remained hidden beneath a veil of shadow.

But when it spoke, its voice was unmistakably human.

"My children."

Elara stepped closer to Toby.

The figure lowered its head.

"I have waited so long."

Ser Kaelen raised his sword.

"Stay where you are."

The crowned figure turned toward him.

"Still giving orders, Kaelen?"

"I swore to protect the royal bloodline."

"And yet you stood beside the men who destroyed it."

Kaelen's jaw tightened.

"I stood against you."

The figure laughed.

"Because you feared what I had become."

Toby looked between them.

"What happened to him?"

Nobody answered.

The crowned figure extended one chained hand.

"Ask your mother."

Toby looked toward Lysandra.

She shook her head desperately.

"Please, Tobias. Do not make me tell you this."

"I need to know."

Her eyes filled with tears.

The crowned figure waited.

Finally, Lysandra spoke.

"Your father was King Alaric Aurelian."

Seraphine closed her eyes.

"He was the last king chosen by the Crownfire," Lysandra continued. "He was brave, kind, and beloved by the people."

Toby stared at the figure.

"What happened?"

Lysandra swallowed.

"He discovered the truth about the covenant."

The crowned figure tilted its head.

"And I tried to end it."

"Yes," she whispered.

"But the priests would not allow it."

"No."

"So I sought another way."

Lysandra began crying.

"You sought the power beneath the prison."

The figure's voice became colder.

"I sought freedom."

"You opened the forbidden gate!"

"I opened a door that should never have been sealed!"

Lysandra screamed.

"And something came through!"

Silence.

The crowned figure stopped moving.

Toby felt the air grow colder.

"What came through?" he whispered.

Lysandra looked toward the shadow.

"An ancient consciousness that existed before the First Dynasty. The same being Queen Aurelia imprisoned four hundred years ago."

The crowned figure laughed softly.

"Your mother calls it a monster because she fears what she cannot understand."

Lysandra shook her head.

"It promised Alaric the power to destroy the covenant."

"And I accepted."

"It entered his body."

Toby's breath caught.

Lysandra looked directly at him.

"Your father is still alive, Tobias. But he is no longer alone inside himself."

Elara stared at the crowned figure.

"Then the thing speaking through the crimson seal..."

Lysandra nodded.

"Is part of the same entity."

Toby remembered the false Mara.

The possessed guard.

The woman's voice that had called itself his mother.

All of them had been fragments of the same imprisoned consciousness.

"But why did it pretend to be Queen Aurelia?" he asked.

Seraphine answered.

"Because the first queen was the only person who ever defeated it."

The crowned figure turned toward her.

"Defeated?"

Its laughter shook the chamber.

"Your ancestors did not defeat me. They merely delayed the inevitable."

Kaelen stepped forward.

"Then the seventh chain will remain intact."

The figure's voice became dangerously quiet.

"Will it?"

The golden lock began trembling.

Toby looked down.

His ring had reappeared around his finger.

The silver band glowed with a light brighter than before.

He tried to pull it off.

It would not move.

"What's happening?"

Seraphine rushed toward him.

"The Crownfire is responding to the king."

The crowned figure extended its hand.

"Come to me, Tobias."

Toby stumbled backward.

The ring burned.

A golden line spread from his finger to his wrist.

Then another.

And another.

Elara seized his arm.

"Toby!"

He screamed.

The flames erupted.

But this time, they did not rise toward the ceiling.

They flowed downward.

Toward the seventh chain.

Kaelen lunged.

His sword struck the golden stream.

The blade shattered.

The knight staggered backward.

"No!"

The crowned figure began laughing.

"Yes."

Lysandra screamed.

"Tobias, fight it!"

The boy fell to his knees.

He tried to close his hand.

He tried to stop the fire.

But the power was no longer obeying him.

It was answering something older.

Something beneath the world.

Cassian watched the scene from beside the broken columns.

For seventeen years, he had believed the bargain he made would save Elara.

He had surrendered secrets.

He had betrayed friends.

He had helped conceal Lysandra's imprisonment.

And when the covenant demanded another heir, he had agreed to deliver Toby.

Now he understood the truth.

The creature had never intended to keep its promises.

It had used his love for Elara to bring both royal children into the same chamber.

Cassian looked toward the black-armored soldiers.

"Captain."

The officer approached.

"My lord?"

"Evacuate the sanctuary."

The captain hesitated.

"And the prince?"

Cassian looked toward Toby.

"Leave him."

"My lord?"

"Get everyone out."

The officer bowed and hurried away.

Cassian drew a narrow silver dagger from beneath his coat.

Its blade was engraved with ancient runes.

He had carried it for seventeen years.

A gift from the woman who had promised to return Lysandra to him.

He now knew that promise had been a lie.

Cassian approached the edge of the abyss.

The crowned figure turned.

"Cassian."

The nobleman stopped.

"You have served me faithfully."

Cassian's expression hardened.

"No."

The figure tilted its head.

"No?"

"I served a promise."

"And what is a promise without obedience?"

Cassian looked toward Elara.

She was holding Toby as the golden flames consumed his arms.

His daughter.

The child he had raised.

The child he had almost destroyed.

Cassian whispered, "A lie."

Then he threw the dagger.

The silver blade flew across the abyss.

It struck the crowned figure directly in the chest.

For one instant, the entire sanctuary fell silent.

Then the figure screamed.

Black fire erupted from the wound.

The golden stream connecting Toby to the seventh chain flickered.

Toby collapsed.

Elara caught him.

The crowned figure staggered backward.

Cassian stared.

The dagger had worked.

For the first time, the creature was wounded.

Then the figure slowly raised its head.

Its voice became monstrous.

"You dare?"

Cassian stepped backward.

"I should have done this seventeen years ago."

A black chain shot from the abyss.

It wrapped around his throat.

Elara screamed.

"FATHER!"

Cassian was lifted from the floor.

His feet kicked helplessly.

The crowned figure drew him toward the darkness.

"You wanted your daughter to live," it whispered.

Cassian struggled to breathe.

"Yes..."

"Then watch what your bargain has purchased."

The chain tightened.

Cassian's body went still.

Elara screamed again.

But before the figure could drag him into the abyss, Ser Kaelen seized the chain.

The ancient knight planted his feet against the shattered floor.

His armor groaned.

"Not this time."

The crowned figure turned.

"Kaelen."

The knight pulled with all his strength.

The chain resisted.

Cracks spread across the stone beneath his boots.

Then Mara rushed forward.

She seized the fallen Nullsilver shackles and wrapped them around the chain.

The black metal hissed.

The chain loosened.

Cassian fell.

Kaelen caught him before he struck the floor.

The crowned figure roared.

"You cannot save them all!"

Kaelen looked toward Toby.

"No."

Then he looked toward the imprisoned Lysandra.

"But perhaps we can save enough."

Toby slowly opened his eyes.

He was lying in Elara's arms.

The golden flames had faded.

His hands were covered in dark burns, but the ring remained intact.

Elara brushed the hair from his forehead.

"Stay with me."

He looked at her.

"Did I break it?"

She shook her head.

"No."

Toby exhaled.

Then he heard the chain.

A deep metallic groan echoed from the abyss.

The seventh binding had begun cracking.

Not from the outside.

From within.

Seraphine stared at the golden lock.

"Impossible."

Lysandra's face drained of color.

"No..."

The crowned figure stopped laughing.

For the first time, it seemed confused.

"What is happening?"

A second voice emerged from beneath the darkness.

A man's voice.

But unlike the crowned figure's, this voice sounded weak.

Exhausted.

Human.

"Lysandra..."

The imprisoned princess began crying.

"Alaric?"

The crowned figure jerked violently.

Its chains tightened around its own body.

The shadow covering its face began to split.

Beneath the darkness appeared the face of a man with dark hair, silver-gray eyes, and a deep scar across his brow.

Toby stared.

The man looked like him.

Older.

Wounded.

But unmistakably familiar.

"Father?" he whispered.

The man looked toward him.

Tears filled his eyes.

"Tobias."

The shadow screamed.

"BE SILENT!"

The man's face twisted in pain.

But he forced himself to speak.

"Do not... trust... the crown..."

Lysandra sobbed.

"Alaric, fight it!"

The man looked toward the golden lock.

Then toward Toby.

His expression became desperate.

"Son... listen carefully..."

The shadow tried to close around his face.

Alaric screamed.

But he managed one final sentence.

"The Crown of Ashes is not a weapon."

Toby struggled to sit up.

"What?"

Alaric's eyes filled with terror.

"It's a prison."

The shadow roared.

The man's face began disappearing.

"And the one who wears it..."

His voice broke.

Toby leaned forward.

"Father!"

Alaric screamed the final words before the darkness swallowed him.

"BECOMES THE NEXT KING BENEATH THE WORLD!"

The crowned figure collapsed to one knee.

For several seconds, the sanctuary was silent.

Then the black crown began to glow.

One of its seven broken spikes slowly repaired itself.

Seraphine staggered backward.

"The succession has begun."

Toby looked at her.

"What succession?"

The queen's face was filled with horror.

"The Crownfire has chosen its next vessel."

Elara tightened her grip around Toby.

"No."

The silver ring on his finger suddenly split apart.

Seven thin lines of black metal spread across his hand.

They climbed his wrist.

Then his arm.

Toby screamed.

Elara tried to pull the metal away.

It would not move.

Ser Kaelen rushed toward them.

But before he could reach the boy, the black markings stopped.

A crown-shaped symbol appeared beneath Toby's skin.

The crowned figure slowly raised its head.

Its voice was filled with terrible satisfaction.

"At last."

Toby stared at his hand.

The mark pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

Then a voice whispered inside his mind.

Not his father's.

Not the creature's.

A woman's voice.

Ancient.

Cold.

And strangely familiar.

Welcome, my heir.

Toby froze.

I have waited four hundred years for you.

He looked toward the shattered mural of Queen Aurelia.

The painted woman's eyes were glowing.

Then the voice whispered something that made his blood turn cold.

"Your father was never the true prisoner, Tobias. I am."

And beneath the basilica, the seven stone coffins began opening at once.
