# Chapter 11 - The Darkness Wearing Toby's Face

Queen Elara knew something was terribly wrong when her son smiled at her without recognizing her.

The boy standing before her still had Toby's tousled brown hair, his freckled cheeks, and the small scar beneath his chin from a childhood fall. His hands still held the Sunforged Arc.

But his eyes were black.

And the voice emerging from his mouth belonged to Malachar.

"Thank you for freeing me."

Elara staggered backward.

"Tobias?"

The boy tilted his head.

"He's here."

He pressed one finger against his temple.

"Somewhere."

A cold smile spread across his face.

"He's screaming for you."

Elara covered her mouth.

King Aldric struggled to stand.

"Malachar, release him!"

The creature wearing Toby's body laughed.

"You spent eleven years trying to keep me imprisoned, Aldric. Surely you didn't expect me to leave without taking something valuable."

Seraphine pulled Kael behind her.

Garrick raised his sword despite the pain in his wounded shoulder.

Lucan stood near the entrance, trembling.

Only Elara moved toward the boy.

"Tobias, listen to my voice."

The black eyes turned toward her.

"Mother?"

For one brief instant, hope surged through her.

Then the smile returned.

"How easily that word controls you."

Elara stopped.

Malachar lifted the Sunforged Arc.

Golden fire crawled along its limbs, but the light had changed. Thin black veins now twisted through the ancient metal.

Aldric went pale.

"The bow is rejecting him."

Malachar examined the weapon.

"Not quite."

He pulled the string.

A black arrow appeared.

At its center burned a tiny golden flame.

"Your son is still fighting."

He aimed toward Garrick.

"And I wonder how long that courage will last."

Elara screamed.

"Don't!"

The arrow flew.

Garrick raised his sword.

The impact shattered the blade and hurled him against the wall.

Lucan rushed toward him.

"Commander!"

Garrick lay motionless.

Toby's body lowered the bow.

Malachar watched Elara's horrified expression with satisfaction.

"Shall we try someone else?"

Inside the darkness, Toby was drowning.

There was no water.

No sky.

No ground.

Only an endless black ocean filled with voices.

He tried to move, but his body would not obey him.

He tried to scream, but the sound vanished before leaving his mouth.

Then he heard his mother's voice.

Tobias, listen to me.

He struggled toward it.

A golden light appeared far above him.

He reached upward.

But something wrapped around his ankle.

A cold hand.

Then another.

Dozens of pale fingers emerged from the darkness, dragging him downward.

A voice whispered beside his ear.

You wanted everyone to stop choosing for you.

Toby twisted around.

Malachar stood behind him.

Not as the towering creature wearing the iron crown.

But as a man.

His face was identical to King Aldric's.

Now you have your freedom, the creature said.

Toby struggled.

"Let me go!"

Malachar smiled.

You are free to watch.

A window opened in the darkness.

Through it, Toby saw the ruined chamber.

He saw his mother crying.

He saw Garrick lying against the wall.

And he saw himself standing with the Sunforged Arc.

"No!"

He struck the invisible barrier.

"Stop!"

His body raised the bow again.

This time, it aimed toward Seraphine.

Toby screamed.

"Don't hurt her!"

Malachar leaned closer.

Then give me what I want.

Toby turned.

"What?"

Your name.

The boy froze.

Malachar extended his hand.

The royal name that binds the seventh seal. Give it to me willingly, and I will leave your family alive.

Toby stared at him.

"I don't know it."

The creature smiled.

You will.

In the ruined chamber, Kael stepped between Seraphine and the possessed boy.

His Nightglass sword trembled in his hand.

"Get everyone out."

Seraphine seized his arm.

"No."

"Mother—"

"I just got you back."

Kael looked at her.

For eleven years, he had imagined what he would say if he ever saw her again.

He had rehearsed accusations.

Questions.

Cruel words designed to hurt her as deeply as he believed she had hurt him.

Now none of those words mattered.

"Then help me save him," he said.

Seraphine stared.

"How?"

Kael looked toward Toby.

"The darkness was inside me too."

Aldric raised his head.

"What did you feel?"

Kael hesitated.

"Like someone was speaking with my thoughts. Using my memories. Making every fear sound like the truth."

Elara stepped closer.

"Could you resist?"

"Sometimes."

"How?"

Kael looked toward Lyra.

She stood near the broken doorway, her face pale.

"Someone reminded me who I was."

Lyra met his eyes.

A faint warmth passed between them.

Then Kael turned toward Toby.

"If he's still in there, we have to reach him."

Malachar laughed.

"How touching."

He aimed the corrupted bow.

"Shall we see whether family affection is stronger than death?"

Kael raised his sword.

"Try me."

The black arrow struck.

Kael caught it against the Nightglass blade.

A violent explosion shook the chamber.

He staggered backward.

The sword cracked.

Malachar stared.

For the first time, surprise crossed Toby's face.

"Interesting."

Kael smiled grimly.

"You keep saying that."

He lunged.

The Nightglass sword flashed toward Toby's shoulder.

Malachar raised the bow to block.

Steel struck golden metal.

A wave of darkness erupted between them.

Kael felt the creature pressing against his mind.

You were made for me.

He gritted his teeth.

"Not anymore."

He struck again.

Malachar retreated half a step.

Then smiled.

Your mother chose another child over you.

Kael froze.

The words entered his mind like poison.

He saw Seraphine standing between him and Toby.

He remembered the moment she had tried to protect the boy.

For one terrible instant, the old resentment returned.

Malachar seized the opening.

A black tendril struck Kael across the chest.

He flew backward.

Lyra screamed.

"Kael!"

She rushed toward him.

Malachar raised the bow.

"One less problem."

But before he could release the arrow, Elara stepped directly into its path.

The creature stopped.

Her hands were empty.

Her face was wet with tears.

But her voice was steady.

"If you want to kill someone, kill me."

Aldric shouted.

"Elara!"

She ignored him.

Malachar studied her.

"You have offered yourself before."

"Then accept."

The creature smiled.

"Do you know why I never did?"

Elara remained silent.

"Because your death would be merciful."

He lowered the bow.

"I prefer watching you live with what you've done."

Queen Claudia reached the western balcony as the first black clouds spread across High Valen.

Below, citizens crowded the streets.

Some prayed.

Others fled toward the city gates.

A few knelt before the castle, believing the bells had announced the return of the rightful king.

Claudia watched them with hollow eyes.

For eleven years, she had ruled these people.

She had demanded loyalty.

Collected taxes.

Punished dissent.

And convinced herself that everything she did was necessary to preserve the kingdom.

Now the kingdom was collapsing.

And she had caused it.

The golden feather inside her silver box began to glow.

A woman's voice whispered.

The heir has been taken.

Claudia closed her eyes.

"I know."

The final seal is broken.

"Yes."

Then the last choice remains.

Claudia opened the box.

The feather rose into the air.

Golden sparks drifted around it.

"What choice?"

The Dawn Phoenix may restore one life, but its flame requires a willing sacrifice.

Claudia stared.

"Whose life?"

The life of the one who carries the darkness.

She swallowed.

"Tobias."

Yes.

Claudia looked toward the city.

"And the sacrifice?"

The voice became quiet.

The one who opened the prison must close the path.

Claudia's hands began to shake.

For a moment, she imagined refusing.

Running.

Hiding.

Finding another bargain.

But every bargain she had made had brought her here.

She looked down at the feather.

Then whispered, "If I do this, will they forgive me?"

The voice answered.

Forgiveness cannot be purchased.

Claudia closed her eyes.

For the first time in eleven years, she did not argue.

Inside the darkness, Toby found himself standing in the royal nursery.

The room was exactly as he remembered from his dreams.

White curtains.

A cradle beside the window.

A garden filled with roses.

But the room was empty.

He walked toward the cradle.

Inside lay a small silver locket.

He recognized it immediately.

His mother's.

He picked it up.

The locket opened.

A portrait appeared.

King Aldric.

Queen Elara.

A newborn child.

And Queen Claudia standing beside them.

Toby stared at the image.

Then noticed something he had missed before.

Claudia's hand rested on the infant's wrist.

But her fingers were not touching the golden mark.

They were covering it.

He frowned.

A memory stirred.

A woman's voice.

Hide it, Elara. If anyone sees the mark, they'll know.

Toby looked up.

The nursery door opened.

Master Edrin stepped inside.

He looked exactly as Toby remembered him before the sanctuary burned.

Gray robes.

Kind eyes.

The missing finger on his right hand.

"Master?"

Edrin smiled.

"My boy."

Toby rushed toward him.

But stopped.

Something was wrong.

The old man's shadow moved in the opposite direction from his body.

Toby stepped backward.

"You're not him."

The figure smiled.

"Very clever."

Its face began to change.

The gray hair darkened.

The wrinkles vanished.

King Aldric stood before him.

Then the face shifted again.

Malachar.

"You cannot escape me," the creature whispered.

Toby raised his fists.

"I don't have to."

Malachar laughed.

"Then what will you do?"

Toby looked toward the cradle.

He remembered the voice.

Hide it, Elara.

Suddenly, he understood something.

The mark had existed before the ritual.

His parents had not created it.

They had changed it.

Toby turned toward Malachar.

"You lied."

The creature's smile faded.

"About what?"

"My birthmark."

Malachar stared.

Toby continued.

"You said my parents put it there."

"They did."

"No."

He held up the locket.

"The mark was already on my wrist when I was born."

The creature's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Toby noticed.

For the first time, Malachar seemed uncertain.

"What are you remembering?"

Toby stepped forward.

"My parents didn't make me the seventh seal."

The nursery walls began to tremble.

"They tried to hide what I already was."

Malachar's face darkened.

"Stop."

Toby looked directly at him.

"What am I?"

The creature said nothing.

Toby took another step.

"What am I?"

Malachar raised his hand.

The nursery shattered.

Toby fell into darkness.

But this time, he was not afraid.

Because he had found something Malachar did not want him to remember.

In the ruined chamber, the possessed boy suddenly screamed.

The Sunforged Arc fell from his hands.

Malachar staggered.

A golden light appeared beneath Toby's skin.

Elara rushed forward.

"Tobias!"

The boy collapsed to his knees.

His eyes flickered.

Black.

Hazel.

Black again.

Aldric struggled toward him.

"He's fighting!"

Kael pushed himself upright.

Lyra supported him.

Seraphine stepped closer.

"Toby, listen to us!"

The boy clutched his head.

Two voices emerged from his mouth.

"Get out!"

Then:

He belongs to me.

Toby screamed again.

The golden light intensified.

Malachar's shadow rose behind him, twisting into the shape of a crowned giant.

The creature roared.

You cannot remember!

Toby lifted his head.

His hazel eyes returned.

Only for a moment.

But it was enough.

"Mother!"

Elara dropped beside him.

"I'm here!"

He seized her hand.

"Tell me the truth!"

She began to cry.

"What truth?"

"The mark!"

Elara froze.

Toby struggled to breathe.

"I had it before the ritual!"

Aldric stopped moving.

Seraphine stared.

Elara's face drained of color.

"Tobias..."

"What am I?"

The chamber fell silent.

Then King Aldric spoke.

His voice was barely audible.

"Elara."

She looked toward him.

The king's eyes were filled with terror.

"He remembers."

Malachar screamed.

The black shadow surged toward Toby.

Elara threw herself over her son.

Golden fire erupted from the boy's wrist.

For one blinding instant, the entire chamber disappeared beneath sunlight.

When the light faded, Toby lay unconscious in his mother's arms.

His eyes were closed.

The black crown on his wrist had vanished.

But something new had appeared.

A small golden flame.

Not a seal.

Not a royal symbol.

A living flame.

Aldric stared at it.

Then slowly sank to his knees.

Seraphine looked at him.

"What is it?"

The king's face was white.

For several seconds, he could not speak.

Finally, he whispered, "The First Flame."

Elara began to sob.

Kael looked between them.

"What does that mean?"

Aldric raised his eyes.

His voice trembled.

"It means Tobias was never merely the heir to the throne."

He looked toward the unconscious child.

"He was born carrying the power that created the seven seals."

The chamber fell silent.

Then the darkness behind Toby began to move.

A tall figure emerged from the shadows.

Not Malachar.

Not King Aldric.

A woman wearing a crown of white fire.

Her eyes shone like the rising sun.

She looked down at Toby.

Then at Elara.

And spoke a sentence that made the former queen collapse in terror.

"You were warned not to let the child remember his first life."
