Chapter 9 - The Blood That Could Break the Curse
# Chapter 9 - The Blood That Could Break the Curse
The Nightglass sword pierced Seraphine's chest, and for one terrible heartbeat, Kael remembered who he was.
"Mother?"
His voice emerged as a broken whisper.
Seraphine stood motionless, staring at the black blade buried beneath her collarbone. Blood spread across her cloak, staining the silver embroidery near her heart.
Kael's black eyes flickered.
A trace of their natural gray returned.
He looked down at the sword.
Then at his mother's face.
"No."
His hands began to shake.
"No, no, no..."
Seraphine reached toward him.
Her fingers brushed his cheek.
"Kael."
The young man staggered backward, pulling the blade free.
Seraphine collapsed.
Toby screamed.
He rushed forward, dropping to his knees beside her as blood spread across the fractured stone.
"Aunt Seraphine!"
Her breathing was shallow.
Toby pressed both hands against the wound.
"Don't move. Please don't move."
Seraphine looked past him.
Her eyes remained fixed on her son.
Kael stood frozen, the bloodstained sword hanging from his hand.
"I didn't mean to," he whispered.
A second voice rose from his throat.
You did exactly what you were made to do.
Kael screamed and clutched his head.
Malachar laughed.
"Beautiful. Eleven years of preparation, and the first blow is struck against his own mother."
Toby looked up.
His hazel eyes burned with hatred.
"You made him do it!"
Malachar tilted his iron-crowned head.
"I gave him the strength. The choice was his."
"You're lying!"
"Perhaps."
The creature smiled.
"But isn't that the problem with your family, little prince? Everyone lies."
Behind them, King Aldric struggled against his golden chains.
"Elara! The wound!"
Queen Elara dropped beside Seraphine.
She tore open the blood-soaked fabric and examined the injury.
Her expression changed.
"The blade missed the heart."
Toby looked at her desperately.
"Then she'll live?"
Elara hesitated.
"The wound itself may not kill her."
Black veins were already spreading beneath Seraphine's skin.
"But Nightglass carries the corruption of the Hollow Realm."
Seraphine coughed.
A thin line of blood ran from her mouth.
Toby remembered Garrick.
The same black veins.
The same poison.
"There's a cure," he said quickly. "Dawnroot. Garrick went to find some."
Elara shook her head.
"Dawnroot can slow ordinary Nightglass poisoning. But Kael's sword is bound directly to Malachar."
Toby stared at the spreading darkness.
"Then what can save her?"
Elara looked at the golden mark on his wrist.
And said nothing.
Far beneath High Valen Castle, Lyra Ashcombe knelt beside the shattered chains of Lord Cassian Valcrest.
The chamber had fallen silent after Kael disappeared through the black doorway.
Only a strange burning symbol remained on the floor.
Cassian struggled to stand.
"We have to find him."
Lyra caught his arm.
"You're barely able to walk."
"My son is dying."
She looked toward the symbol.
"How do you know?"
Cassian pointed to the broken crown carved into the stone.
"That mark belongs to the second vessel. When the first vessel dies, Malachar can transfer the entire prison into the second."
Lyra went pale.
"Tobias."
Cassian nodded.
"If Kael kills the boy, the darkness will consume him completely."
Lyra stood.
"Then we stop him."
Cassian gave a bitter laugh.
"With what? Your knives? My broken chains?"
Lyra looked at the Nightglass fragments scattered near the wall.
Then at the prison records she had carried from Claudia's archive.
"There may be another way."
Cassian frowned.
"What?"
She opened the leather-bound ledger.
Several pages had been torn from its center.
But one entry remained.
Subject K-V: Secondary vessel. Binding incomplete. Emotional memory retention remains a significant weakness.
Lyra read it twice.
Then looked up.
"Claudia never finished the ritual."
Cassian's expression changed.
"How can you be certain?"
"Because Kael still remembers."
"Remembers what?"
"People he loves."
She thought of the moment Kael had seized her wrist in anger, then released it as soon as she said he was hurting her.
The guilt in his eyes.
The tenderness he tried to conceal.
The way he had hesitated when confronting Seraphine.
"Malachar can control his body," Lyra whispered. "But he hasn't destroyed everything inside him."
Cassian stared at her.
"Then the boy may still be saved."
Lyra nodded.
"But we need to reach him before he kills Tobias."
Inside the Hollow Realm, Toby refused to leave Seraphine's side.
Her skin had become unnaturally cold.
The black veins continued spreading toward her throat.
Elara pressed a hand against the wound, trying to slow the bleeding.
"Seraphine, stay awake."
Seraphine smiled weakly.
"You always were terrible at giving orders."
Elara's eyes filled with tears.
"Don't."
"Don't what?"
"Don't speak as though you're dying."
Seraphine looked at her.
For a moment, the bitterness between them seemed to disappear.
Then she whispered, "You gave them my son."
Elara lowered her eyes.
"I know."
"I trusted you."
"I know."
Seraphine struggled to breathe.
"I spent eleven years believing he was dead."
Elara began to cry.
"I didn't know Claudia had chosen Kael."
"But you knew there would be another child."
The accusation hung between them.
Elara could not deny it.
Toby looked at his mother.
He wanted to defend her.
He wanted to believe she had been deceived.
But he remembered the hidden ritual.
The golden mark.
The choices made before he was old enough to understand them.
And for the first time, he realized that love did not always prevent people from doing terrible things.
Sometimes love was the excuse they used.
Seraphine turned toward Toby.
"Don't let them choose for you."
He swallowed.
"I won't."
She touched his cheek.
"Promise me."
"I promise."
Her hand fell.
Toby caught it.
"Aunt Seraphine?"
Her eyes closed.
"No!"
He shook her gently.
"Please!"
Elara pressed two fingers against Seraphine's neck.
A faint pulse remained.
"She's alive."
Toby exhaled shakily.
"But not for long," Elara whispered.
Malachar watched them with amusement.
"Such unnecessary suffering."
Toby looked up.
The creature extended one pale hand.
"I can save her."
Elara immediately shook her head.
"No."
Malachar smiled.
"One drop of royal blood. Freely given."
Toby stared.
"That's all?"
"Enough to cleanse the poison."
Elara seized his wrist.
"Tobias, don't."
He looked at her.
"Why?"
"Because he never tells the whole truth."
Malachar laughed.
"Your mother has learned something after all."
Toby stood.
"What happens if I give you my blood?"
The creature's smile widened.
"The seventh seal weakens."
"How much?"
"Enough."
"Enough for what?"
Malachar did not answer.
Toby tightened his grip on the bow.
"Then no."
The creature's expression darkened.
"Watch her die, then."
Above the ruined chamber, Queen Claudia had escaped into a narrow passage connecting the treasury to the old royal chapel.
She stumbled through the darkness, clutching her cracked red gemstone.
Blood stained her hands.
Her crown had fallen somewhere behind her.
For the first time in eleven years, she was not thinking about power.
She was thinking about survival.
The gemstone pulsed.
A voice whispered from within it.
You have disappointed me.
Claudia stopped.
"Leave me alone."
You opened the seventh door.
"You told me to!"
And yet the heir still lives.
Claudia pressed the stone against the wall.
"Then kill him yourself."
The voice laughed.
You know why I cannot.
She froze.
For years, she had believed Malachar was simply waiting for the seals to break.
But now she remembered something he had said during their first meeting.
The final guardian must choose.
Claudia slowly lowered the gemstone.
"The boy has to surrender willingly."
Yes.
"And if he refuses?"
The voice became cold.
Then the second vessel must destroy him.
Claudia closed her eyes.
Kael.
The child she had raised.
The boy she had trained.
The son she had stolen from her own sister.
For a moment, an unfamiliar emotion stirred inside her.
Regret.
Then the gemstone whispered again.
There is still a way to save yourself.
Claudia looked down.
"What way?"
Bring me the true heir's blood.
She hesitated.
"How?"
Use the one person he cannot bear to lose.
Claudia stared into the darkness.
Then slowly smiled.
"His mother."
In the Hollow Realm, King Aldric finally broke one of his chains.
The golden link shattered with a thunderous crack.
Malachar turned sharply.
"What are you doing?"
Aldric raised his head.
His face was pale, but his eyes burned with determination.
"Something I should have done eleven years ago."
He pulled against the remaining chains.
The entire chamber trembled.
Elara looked up.
"Aldric!"
"Take Tobias and leave!"
Malachar extended one hand.
Black tendrils shot toward the king.
Aldric screamed as they wrapped around his arms.
But he continued pulling.
Another chain shattered.
The Sunforged Arc blazed in Toby's hands.
He felt a strange connection forming between himself and his father.
A thread of warmth.
A pulse of golden light.
Then a voice whispered inside his mind.
The blood of the guardian may heal what darkness has wounded.
Toby froze.
He looked toward Seraphine.
Then at the mark on his wrist.
The voice continued.
But blood given through fear strengthens the prison. Blood given through love strengthens the light.
Toby stared.
Malachar had offered to heal Seraphine in exchange for blood.
But perhaps the creature had deliberately concealed something.
Perhaps the blood itself was not what mattered.
Perhaps it was the reason it was given.
Toby knelt beside Seraphine.
Elara looked at him.
"What are you doing?"
He took the silver dagger.
His mother seized his hand.
"No."
Toby met her eyes.
"You said the final seal belongs to the one who chooses."
Elara froze.
"Yes."
"Then let me choose."
He drew the blade lightly across his palm.
A thin line of blood appeared.
Elara gasped.
"Tobias!"
But Toby had already pressed his hand against Seraphine's wound.
The golden mark on his wrist ignited.
A circle of sunlight spread beneath them.
Malachar turned.
His expression changed.
"No."
Toby closed his eyes.
He thought of Master Edrin.
Of the sanctuary.
Of Seraphine stepping between him and Kael's sword.
And of the promise he had made.
Don't let them choose for you.
The golden light intensified.
The black veins beneath Seraphine's skin began to retreat.
Elara stared.
"It's working."
Malachar roared.
The Hollow Realm shook.
Toby gritted his teeth.
The light surged.
Then suddenly stopped.
He collapsed backward.
Elara caught him.
"Tobias!"
Seraphine gasped.
Her eyes opened.
The black veins had vanished.
She was alive.
But Toby's golden birthmark had changed.
One of its seven rays had turned black.
Elara saw it.
Her face drained of color.
"No."
Toby looked down.
"What happened?"
She touched the darkened ray.
"You transferred part of the corruption into yourself."
Toby stared.
"Can it be removed?"
Elara did not answer.
Malachar began to laugh.
"Beautiful."
The creature stepped forward.
"Your compassion has saved one life."
Its smile widened.
"And shortened your own."
Kael stood motionless near the shattered doorway.
His Nightglass sword trembled.
The blackness in his eyes flickered.
He had watched Toby save Seraphine.
He had watched the boy bleed for the woman Kael himself had wounded.
And somewhere beneath the darkness controlling him, a memory stirred.
A little boy running through a garden.
A woman kneeling beside white roses.
Her arms opening.
Kael, come here.
The memory vanished.
Another appeared.
A dark room.
Queen Claudia holding a silver cup.
Drink this, little prince.
Kael staggered.
Malachar noticed.
"Obey."
The young man's body stiffened.
His sword rose.
Toby struggled to stand.
Seraphine reached toward her son.
"Kael."
His hand trembled.
"Mother?"
The word emerged weakly.
Seraphine began to cry.
"Yes."
Kael took one step toward her.
Then another.
Malachar's expression darkened.
"Kill the first vessel."
Kael stopped.
His eyes turned black again.
He raised the sword toward Toby.
Seraphine screamed.
"No!"
But Kael did not strike.
Instead, he turned the blade toward his own chest.
Malachar froze.
"What are you doing?"
Kael's voice emerged through clenched teeth.
"Something... you didn't teach me."
He pressed the sword against his armor.
Seraphine rushed forward.
"Kael, don't!"
The young man looked at her.
For one brief moment, his eyes were clear.
"I'm sorry, Mother."
Then he drove the blade downward.
But before the sword could pierce his heart, a golden arrow struck the weapon.
The impact knocked it from his hands.
Kael collapsed.
Toby stood several paces away, his bow still raised.
"I told you," the boy whispered.
"No one gets to choose for us."
Malachar stared at him.
Then slowly smiled.
"You really are your father's son."
Toby lowered the bow.
"Maybe."
He looked toward Kael.
"But I'm going to be better."
A thunderous crash echoed from the far side of the chamber.
A black doorway opened.
Lyra emerged, followed by Lord Cassian.
Both stopped when they saw Kael lying on the floor.
"Kael!"
Lyra rushed toward him.
Cassian followed.
Seraphine looked up.
Her breath caught.
"Cassian?"
The older man froze.
For eleven years, he had dreamed of seeing her again.
Now she stood before him, wounded but alive.
"Seraphine."
She stared.
Then whispered, "You're alive."
Cassian approached slowly.
"I tried to find you."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I thought Claudia killed you."
"She wanted us both to believe that."
Kael stirred between them.
Lyra knelt beside him.
"Kael, can you hear me?"
His eyes opened.
For a moment, they were clear.
He looked at his mother.
Then his father.
Confusion crossed his face.
"Father?"
Cassian knelt.
"Yes, my son."
Kael began to cry.
"I hurt her."
Seraphine reached for his hand.
"I'm here."
"I didn't mean to."
"I know."
Malachar watched the reunion in silence.
Then he began to laugh.
The sound was different this time.
Not amused.
Triumphant.
Toby turned.
"What?"
The creature looked toward the broken seventh door.
"All the vessels are gathered."
Elara went pale.
Aldric struggled against his remaining chains.
"No!"
Malachar raised both hands.
The golden mark on Toby's wrist blazed.
Kael's black crown symbol ignited.
And beneath Seraphine's healed wound, a third mark appeared.
A silver rose surrounded by seven thorns.
Seraphine gasped.
Cassian stared.
"What is that?"
Malachar smiled.
"The bloodline was never divided into two vessels."
Elara covered her mouth.
"No."
The creature continued.
"There were always three."
Toby looked toward Seraphine.
Her silver mark spread across her chest.
Kael screamed as the black crown burned into his skin.
The three symbols began pulsing together.
Malachar extended his arms.
"One vessel to open the door."
He pointed toward Toby.
"One vessel to carry the darkness."
He turned toward Kael.
"And one vessel to bind them together."
His gaze settled on Seraphine.
The chamber shook violently.
The three marks emitted a blinding light.
Then Malachar spoke the words that made King Aldric scream in horror.
"The third vessel has awakened. Now the mother must choose which son will die."
